Bernardes est né dans une famille bourgeoise de Ponte da Barca aux bords de la rivière Lima, à laquelle il chantait souvent des louanges. En 1578, il fut choisi comme poète officiel de l'expédition de D. Sebastião qui se termina par la bataille d'Alcácer Quibir où il fut capturé et emprisonné jusqu'en 1581. "Varias rimas ao bom Iesus, e a Virgem", écrit pendant sa captivité, fut son premier ouvrage publié, paru en 1594, suivi en 1596 par "O Lyma" et ensuite "Rimas varias, flores do Lima". Bernardes écrivait ses poèmes en hendécasyllabe qui est un vers de onze syllabes d'origine italienne. Travail de vers sur les trois dernières pages sans atteint au texte. Rares rousseurs.

Folhas de rosto e da Taboada truncadas o que leva a que o primeiro volume apresentado como Rimas Várias tenha como conteúdo o do segundo volume, Várias Rimas e que este tenha como seguimento as Rimas Várias . 'DIOGO BERNARDES, ao qual o Catalogo chamado da Academia accrescenta o appellido de PIMENTA, que sendo effectivamente de seu pae não ha com tudo memoria de que elle o usasse. Foi natural da villa de Ponte de Lima, se devemos dar credito á declaração exarada no rosto do seu livro das Rimas ao bom Jesus, e ao mais que judiciosamente se pondera no outro Catalogo de auctores, que precede o Diccionario da Ling. Port. da Acad. a pag. LXIX; ficando assim menos provavel a asserção de Barbosa, que o julgou nascido na Ponte da Barca. - Nasceu entre os annos de 1530 e 1540, e com certeza antes d'este ultimo, por ser o do nascimento de seu irmão mais moço Fr. Agostinho da Cruz. Ignoram se quaes fossem os seus estudos e occupação, até que passou á corte de Madrid na companhia de Pedro d'Alcaçova Carneiro, mandado por D. Sebastião na qualidade de seu embaixador a Filippe II. - Acompanhou depois o mesmo D. Sebastião na infeliz jornada d'Africa, e foi um dos que ficaram captivos na batalha de 4 de Agosto de 1578. Sendo resgatado voltou á patria onde viveu ainda bastantes annos em situação que, a julgarmos pelas suas queixas, não distava muito do miseravel, trazendo lhe novas difficuldades o casamento que parece contrahira n'esse intervallo. Os poetas contemporaneos de Bernardes, especialmente Antonio Ferreira e Sá de Miranda, falam d'elle com os maiores elogios. O P. Antonio Pereira de Figueiredo dá lhe o outavo logar entre os classicos da lingua, collocando o immediato a Camões. Mas Francisco José Freire é lhe menos favoravel, pois apenas o enumera entre os textos de segunda ordem. Manuel de Faria e Sousa, que não sei porque motivo se quiz mostrar seu accerrimo adversario, não só deprime o seu caracter moral, accusando o de ter roubado a Camões não menos de cinco eclogas, o poema a Sancta Ursula e outros versos que imprimiu como proprios, mas abertamente o qualifica de poeta mediocre, e falto d'ingenho. Á parte porém o plagiato, de que não serei eu quem ouse absolvelo, em vista dos fortes argumentos que n'este pleito se tem produzido contra elle, parece me que ha, no que é innegavelmente seu, merito sufficiente para assegurar lhe um logar distincto entre os poetas da eschola italiana a que pertenceu, e com especialidade entre os bucolicos. Ninguem poderá desconhecer nas suas poesias pureza de linguagem, suavidade de metrificação, e certa natural simplicidade de idéas e conceitos, que lhe conquistam a affeição dos leitores.
