"Is there anyone who would deny that Lincoln Kirstein is (to borrow the succulent Japanese title) a Living National Treasure? While his work with the great institution he founded and kept alive for decades is virtually over, his work with English sentences is not. There is more than fifty ears of writing, going back to Hound & Horn, and he is getting better all the time: more subtle, more sonorous, more intense. We are fortunate to have this noble and complicated man among us." -- Susan Sontag.

Hardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Original schoolbook of the era, holding together well and easily read. Some kind of bookplate has been removed from the front pastedown, and "Coit Street School" has been rubber-stamped to top margins of pp. 27 and 49. Remains of paper library label to spine. First page is now the title page, which means the blank free front endpaper is presumably missing. 1898 date to title page matches copyright date; no later dates or printings mentioned. Internal hinges supported long ago with archival white tape. Paper-covered boards are well rubbed. (NOTE: White patterns that show on scan are NOT reflections from our light source. Paper coverings of boards have really peeled that badly.) The usual hagiography of Lincoln. "Children can help to make a bright, progressive school by obeying the requests of the teacher thoughtfully, promptly, and cheerfully. . . . It is the right, the privilege, and the duty of every intelligent male citizen who has reached the age of twenty-one to vote," etc., etc. (OK, where do we go to vote to "Get government out of the 'schooling' business"?) 255 pp. Reduced from $70.
