William Allen (1770 - 1843) was an English scientist and philanthropist who opposed slavery and engaged in schemes of social and penal improvement in early nineteenth century England. In 1839 William Allen became a founding Committee Member of the British and Foreign Anti-slavery Society for the Abolition of Slavery and the Slave-trade Throughout the World, which is today known as Anti-Slavery International. In this role he was an organiser of, and delegate to, the world's first anti-slavery convention, which was held in London in 1840 - an event depicted in a large painting by Benjamin Haydon that hangs in the National Portrait Gallery, London. Add to basketLeather. Condition: Very Good. None (illustrator). First edition. An extremely scarce pair of works filled with issues of The Lindfield Reporter, an 18th-century anti slavery philanthropic magazine compiled by prominent English Quaker William Allen. Bound in half calf with marbled paper-covered boards. A very scarce philanthropic work, largely dedicated to the cause of anti-slavery. Two volumes containing works from 'The Lindfield Reporter, or Philanthropic Magazine', from the years 1837, 1838, 1841 and 1842. The periodical was originally published in four volumes between 1835 and 1842. This set contains volumes II and IV only. 'The Lindfield Reporter' was created by Quaker philanthropist and scientist, William Allen, who was best known for his opposition of slavery and ideas of social progression. This magazine followed Allen's first series of 'The Philanthropist', a periodical published in 1811-19, and was similarly aimed to spread Quaker and Whig progressive ideas. Commencing in 1835, 'The Lindfield Reporter' promoted social reform, presenting a largely optimistic view at a time when the political future appeared to be bright. With Allen's ties to government and his engagement in schemes of social and penal improvement, the Reporter reflected this new confidence in the prospect of further shaping the political agenda. Bound in half calf with marbled paper-covered boards. Endpapers renewed and blanks discarded. Externally, very good, with rubbing to boards and extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good. book.
