Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. This is a collection of poetry by Jacques de Vilade inspired by his encounters with Islam during his travels. He does not present the work as a serious historical or anthropological study of Islam, but rather his impressions of Islam and the people who follow it, as well as the plac…es where it flourished. As he described in the preface of the work, "My book could not therefore have didactic pretensions; it is not a school book, it is essentially, to employ a slightly uncivilized term, albeit a topical one, a subjective work; it is the collection, it is the gradual development of the sensations of a French soul in contact with Islam and with the Arab soul, in a reduced setting, it is true, since it was not given to me to know with my own eyes.more than a part of the Muslim world." Although he employs the broad term "L'Islam" to denote his work, he does admit that his experiences are restricted primarily to Algeria. No information could be found about de Vilade's biography. This copy, however, is inscribed by the author to Rene Francois Armand "Sully" Prudhomme (1839-1907), a French poet and essayist, who was the first winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature. The poems in the work are organized in different sections which are as follows: I. La Cote Ambree II. Reflets d'Orient III. L'Ame Arabe IV. Le Dogme de L'Islam V. Synthese This beautiful book is bound in red Morocco with a gilt title on the spine, and has stunning marbled pastedowns. There is some bumping to the top corners, as well as the leather being worn off the bottom edges of the covers. This has also removed a gilt line, which remains on the top. There is also gilt ornamentation on the folded over section of the leather on the inside of the covers. There is some slight wear to the leather near the spine, on both the front and the back. There is a small chip out of the leather on the back cover. There is some very slight foxing on the inside, but the text is clean and the binding is very tight. There is a bookplate of a former owner stuck to the front flyleaf. Inscribed by Author(s).
