First Edition Signed
Condition: UNSPECIFIED. First edition, first impression, a superb presentation copy from the author to his brother Hugh Blair Brenan and his wife Marjorie Rhoda Brenan, inscribed on the front free endpaper "to Blair and Rhoda from Gerald". An English bohemian on the peripheries of the Bloomsbury Group, Brenan lived in Spain from 1919 onwards, until he had to flee the country in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War. From afar, he wrote numerous passionate accounts of the people, culture, and literature of the nation, writings which were acclaimed by academic and popular readers alike. The present book "is a work of persuasion, a vigorous personal account of Spanish literature from Roman times to the present day, a connected narrative, not a reference manual" (front flap). He was permitted to return to Spain in 1953, despite his opposition to the Franco regime, and with the publication of his works in Spanish following the end of Francoism, he has been highly esteemed by his adopted country. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With dust jacket. Spine lightly sunned, minor peripheral bumping, a very good copy in good jacket, spine panel darkened and lightly rubbed, peripheral shelfwear reinforced on the verso, price-clipped.
