no binding. Condition: very good. This photogravure titled The Little Marquis is a finely detailed reproduction of a portrait by the French artist Léon Comerre, printed by Lemercier Paris and published in the 1892 edition of The Magazine of Art by Cassell & Company, Ltd, with branches in London, Paris, and Melbourne. The subject, historically identified as Louis Augustus, Dauphin of France, is depicted in the opulent attire befitting a young nobleman of the Ancien Régime, emphasizing both his high rank and delicate youth. He stands with one hand on a ceremonial cane and the other tucked beneath a tricorne hat, dressed in an ornate satin suit with lace cuffs, elaborate ruffles, and decorative buttons, all rendered with exquisite tonal finesse characteristic of photogravure's capacity for reproducing painterly depth and texture. The poised and confident stance against a classical column and draped curtain backdrop underscores both his aristocratic bearing and the formal conventions of 18th-century portraiture. The print is signed at lower left Léon Comerre and captioned below the image: "The Little Marquis" with the additional imprint Printed by Lemercier Paris, affirming the print's origin and artistic attribution. Comerre, a notable academic painter, was known for his refined portraits, and here captures the grace and formality of French court life in youth. The work blends elegance with the innocence of childhood, serving as both an artistic and historical document of French royal heritage.IMAGE SIZE: approx 4 x 6 1/2 Inches CONDITION: Cropped from original,As scanned.
