About the book >.>.> One of the many achievements of modern logic is to have provided a precise statement, and thorough justification, of methods for proving the correctness of a wide spectrum of arguments. This book, which is aimed at second or third year under-graduates, concentrates on natural deduction and axiomatic methods, taking them up to the level of quantified modal logic. As well as explaining techniques, it aims to show why they work in proving correctness, and also how far they are useful in detecting fallacy. Throughout the emphasis is on in-stilling philosophical understanding rather than just technical com-petence, in the belief that many students today learn the techniques without realising what they are for and how they operate. Christopher Kirwan is Lecturer in Philosophy at Oxford and a Fellow of Exeter College. (SP).
