Soft cover. Condition: Fine. SIGNED Abridged Edition with ORIGINAL photo of Nelson Mandela! "NO ONE IS BORN HATING ANOTHER PERSON BECAUSE OF THE COLOR OF HIS SKIN, OR HIS BACKGROUND, OR HIS RELIGION. PEOPLE MUST LEARN TO HATE, AND IF THEY CAN LEARN TO HATE, THEY CAN BE TAUGHT TO LOVE, FOR LOVE COMES MORE NATURALLY TO THE HUMAN HEART THAN ITS OPPOSITE." With a laid-in ORIGINAL photograph of Mandela. The photo-illustrated autobiography of one of the towering figures of 20th-century African history, first published in 1994, this edition has been sensitively abridged and illustrated, detailing the epic life story of Nelson Mandela following his tale of hardship, resilience, and ultimate triumph from dramatic years underground to his years in prison to his release in 1991 and, triumphantly, his swearing in as the country's first democratically elected president on May 10, 1994. First South African edition, early printing of this classic autobiography, which has went on to sell over six million copies worldwide. Octavo, original black cloth, cartographic endpapers, illustrated with photographs. Boldly signed on the title page by the author, "To Ronel, Compliments and best wishes to an outstanding lady. NMandela 28.11.95." Fine in a near fine dust jacket. "The Nelson Mandela who emerges from his memoir is considerably more human than the icon of legend Mandela is, on the evidence of his amazing life, neither a messiah nor a moralist nor really a revolutionary but a pragmatist to the core, a shrewd balancer of honor and interests. He is, to use a word unhappily fallen into disrepute, a politician, though one distinguished from lesser practitioners of his calling mainly by his unwavering faith in his ultimate objective, ending white minority rule" (New York Times). It is the basis for the film titled Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom directed by Justin Chadwick, written by William Nicholson, produced by Anant Singh and starring Idris Elba.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. THE TRUE FIRST EDITION - WITH A PERSONAL DEDICATION FROM NELSON MANDELA DATED THE 25TH JUNE 1997 - THE DAY THAT HE WAS PRESENTED WITH THE PIERRE DE COUBERTIN WORLD FAIR PLAY TROPHY IN PRETORIA SOUTH AFRICA: Importantly, this is the true first impression with First Published in South Africa in 1994 stated on the copyright page, and with no later printings listed. The book is firm and square. The covers are clean, with light spine end nudges only. The pages are clean throughout, with a bit of page edge tone starting { see my images }; in a complete original dust jacket, clean and bright, very good even colour, very light extremity rubs only { see images }. The personal dedication to Michael Robinson is as follows "To Michael Robinson, Best Wishes and Success to you, N Mandela 25.6.97". This suggests that the recipient was present on this special day and that he had shared time with Nelson Mandela. In my view, the warmth of this dedication enhances the book. So many Flat Signed examples are reeled off one after another. This book is unique and does not fall into that category. p.630, Maps on lining papers, illustrations, includes index. NOTE: PRETORIA, JUNE 25, 1997 - "The International Committee for Fair Play presents every year its highest distinction - the Pierre de Coubertin Fair Play Award - to an outstanding athlete or personality who by his or her exceptional behaviour serves an example to the world. Prof. Dr. Norbert Muller: 'On behalf of the International Committee for Fair Play I have the honour of presenting today the highest international distinction for fair play to a man who according to our criteria has set a truly extraordinary and extremely impressive example of the spirit of fair play for the youth of all countries - to you, esteemed President Nelson Mandela'. You explain in your book "Long Walk to Freedom" how much your own experiences as an athlete served as a decisive help and guide. It is very important, Mister President, that you should have expressed this so clearly. Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympic Movement, rightly emphasized on many occasions participation in sports is the foundation of man's moral strength, and this, Mister President, you have experienced in your own long life. You were in your youth, esteemed President Nelson Mandela, a successful boxer, you also played football and competed in cross-country races. You steeled your body and soul through those precious lessons for a hard, lifelong battle and you managed to overcome many hardships through fair play, which is why we honour you today. You have personally suffered from illness, humiliation, and injury in your 28 years of imprisonment, but you have sublimated this into a feeling of brotherhood and reconciliation between the black and white population of your great country, South Africa. You have applied your sense of fair play acquired in sport to the political life of South Africa, and you have emerged as a legitimate ?and especially as a fair- spokesman - for your Continent in many difficult missions. When for the first time, after decades of absence, a racially mixed team entered the Olympic arena of Barcelona in 1992, you Mister President, having played an essential role in this normalisation process, were present in person to attend that event. The International Committee for Fair Play thus honors today Mister Nelson Mandela as an exceptional example of a personality who has applied the principles of fair play to public life, principles which are the foundation not only of sport but also of all social engagements in which the dignity and worth of each and every person is respected." { Source: 60 years of Fair Play Awards } [ S.J.] WE ARE OPEN TO SENSIBLE OFFERS. Hardcover. First edition. This presentation copy of the South African first edition of Nelson Mandela s autobiography was inscribed and dated by him during his presidency. Mandela began writing what would become Long Walk to Freedom clandestinely in prison in 1974. It was published in 1994, the same year that Mandela became President of South Africa. The five-line inscription on the half title reads: "To Barry Pecher, | Compliments | & | best wishes | Mandela | 28.3.95". The date is exactly a year and a day after Mandela voted for the first time in his life - in the same election that made him leader of his nation.Condition is very good in a very good dust jacket. The black cloth binding is square, tight, and clean with sharp corners bright spine gilt, and minor shelf wear to extremities. The contents are bright with a crisp feel. Light spotting appears confined to the rear endpaper and page edges, which also show light soiling. The upper right front free endpaper a map of South Africa shows abrasion, likely from erasure of a previous owner name or bookseller notation. On the half title, above the printed title, several lines of ink have had White-Out correction fluid applied, ostensibly to obscure an inked previous owner name or notation. The White-Out is above the printed title, while Mandela s presentation inscription is below and entirely unaffected. The dust jacket, featuring portraits of Mandela on the front and rear faces and the South African flag on the spine, is bright and complete, though with light wear to extremities. The jacket is protected beneath a clear, removable, archival cover.Nelson Mandela (1918-2013) was born Rolihlahla Mandela in the tiny village of Mvezo in the Eastern Cape. It was in primary school that he was given the "English" name Nelson. He managed to secure his bachelors degree only after first being expelled for joining a student protest. Mandela joined the African National Congress (ANC) in 1944, four years before Apartheid was adopted as a formal policy by the South African government after the 1948 general election victory of the National Party (NP). Mandela helped form the ANC Youth League. Rising through the ranks, in 1952 he both co-founded South Africa s first black law firm and began to accrue official charges by the government. As a result of government restrictions placed upon him, Mandela could not openly attend adoption of the Freedom Charter in 1955. Neither Mandela nor the NP could know that the government s persecution of Mandela would play a large role in the principles of the Freedom Charter being realized and in Mandela s own political preeminence.Mandela continued to accrue arrests, trials, and acquittals while the ANC was formally banned. By late 1961 Mandela had resorted to preparing for armed struggle, undertaking leadership of Umkhonto we Sizwe, or Spear of the Nation. Facing the death penalty on trial for sabotage, in 1964 Mandela delivered his famous On the Docks speech. During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die. Less than months after he spoke these resonating words, Mandela and co-conspirators were was convicted and sentenced to life in prison. Apartheid applied even to imprisonment. Nelson s sole white co-conspirator was sent to Pretoria Prison while Mandela and his black co-conspirators were sent to Robben Island. The NP s attempt to silence Mandela only increased his celebrity and legitimacy. Mandela was finally released in February 1990 by then-president of South Africa de Klerk. Mandela was integral to negotiations to end white minority rule; he and de Klerk were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.

Ninth printing of the British edition. Inscribed by Mandela to the half title page: "To Margaret Best Wishes N. Mandela 10.5.95". An auspicious date, marking the anniversary of his inauguration as South Africa's first black President in 1994. Additionally inscribed in May 1996 by Mandela's close friend and ally, Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Mandela spent his first night of freedom after his release from prison in 1990 at Tutu's house. Writing about the event: "When I greeted Archbishop Tutu, I enveloped him in a great hug; here was a man who had inspired an entire nation with his words and courage, who had revived the people's hope during the darkest of times." [The Long Walk to Freedom, page 556]. And loosely inserted is an extraordinary piece of paper, inscribed by ANC and SACP leaders, Chris Hani and Winnie Mandela, on one side: "C. Hani General Secretary SACP Cape Town 21-02-92", and on the other: "Best Wishes for a free and democratic South Africa Love Always!! Winnie Mandela 21/1/92". Hani was assassinated in April 1993, his death becoming one of the catalysts for the negotiation of democratic elections in 1994, and an important event in helping to establish Nelson Mandela as a presidential figure with the speech he gave appealing for calm in the days after the assassination. The book is firmly bound in slightly marked black cloth lettered in gilt to the spine, it is bumped at the extremities. The text block is slightly toned, marked and dusty with minor spots of foxing, pleasingly showing clear signs of having been well read, rather than being a book purchased purely as a repository for autographs. The dust jacket continues the theme of use and is well worn, toned, slightly marked and rubbed, with a few chips and short closed tears to the edges, which have been enthusiastically repaired to the reverse with strips of laminate. Who Margaret was is sadly lost to history, but whoever she was she put together a remarkable collection of inscriptions by some of the most important leaders in the struggle against the apartheid regime in South Africa.
