Contains a note inscribed by the author to Lord Napier (this was the 10th Lord Napier, Francis Napier, who also became the 1st Baron Ettr…ick). Burgundy cloth covers with gilt illustrations / lettering on both front covers. Bookplates. Frontispieces with tissue guards. Illustrated with woodcut engravings, fold-out cloth maps, and several plates. xvii, 584pp. x, 415pp. On a shelf, this set spans 3.75 inches. CONDITION: Covers have some stains and light shelf wear (front cover of Volume 1 has a few places of dampstaining, but there is no dampstaining past front end-papers). Spines are sunned, and have slight fraying to their heads and feet. Front/back hinges are cracked, bindings are loosening, some cracks to the spines, but nothing is detached (also there is repair cloth tape on Volume 1's front and back hinges, as well as one plate). A few pages have some stains, with only several containing notes and/or underlining, but almost all are clean. A rare and beautiful set of books, gifted to a historically significant figure. PROVENANCE/ABOUT TO WHOM THIS SET WAS INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR: "Francis Napier, 10th Lord Napier and 1st Baron Ettrick, KT, PC (15 September 1819 ? 19 December 1898) was a Scottish polyglot, diplomat and colonial administrator. He served as the British Minister to the United States from 1857 to 1859, Netherlands from 1859 to 1860, Russia from 1861 to 1864, Prussia from 1864 to 1866 and as the Governor of Madras from 1866 to 1872. He also acted as the Viceroy of India from February to May 1872."
