Superbly bound and signed by Hatchards of Piccadilly in full crushed crimson morocco, spine with five raised bands and gilt lettering, triple inner gilt rules. All edges are gilt with head and tailbands and board edges also gilt ruled. Joseph Chamberlain (8 July 1836 2 July 1914) was a British politician and statesman. Unlike most major politicians of the time, he was a self-made businessman who had not attended university. Born in London, Chamberlain made his career in Birmingham, first as a manufacturer of screws and then as a notable Mayor of the city. During his early adulthood he was a radical Liberal Party member and a campaigner for educational reform. He entered the House of Commons aged almost forty, relatively late in life for a front-rank politician. Rising to power through his influence with the Liberal grassroots organisation, he served as President of the Board of Trade in Gladstone's Second Government (188085). At the time, Chamberlain was notable for his attacks on the Conservative leader Lord Salisbury, and in the 1885 general election he proposed the "Unauthorised Programme" of benefits for newly enfranchised agricultural labourers. Chamberlain resigned from Gladstone's Third Government in 1886 in opposition to Irish Home Rule, and after the Liberal Party split he became a Liberal Unionist, a party which included a bloc of MPs based in and around Birmingham. From the 1895 general election the Liberal Unionists were in coalition with the Conservative Party, under Chamberlain's former opponent Lord Salisbury. Chamberlain accepted the post of Secretary of State for the Colonies, declining other positions. In this job, he presided over the Second Boer War and was the dominant figure in the Unionist Government's re-election at the "Khaki Election" in 1900. In 1903, he resigned from the Cabinet to campaign for tariff reform. He obtained the support of most Unionist MPs for this stance, but the split contributed to the landslide Unionist defeat at the 1906 general election. Some months later, shortly after turning seventy, he was disabled by a stroke. Despite never becoming Prime Minister, he is regarded as one of the most important British politicians of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as well as a renowned orator and an interesting character who split both main parties. Winston Churchill later wrote of him that he was the man "who made the weather". Chamberlain was the father of Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain.

First edition, 71, [1]pp., contemporary signature on title, blank outer corners of title chipped, title browned, disbound. Platt, of Standish near Wigan, proposed himself as candidate for ordination at Chester but since he showed no sign of piety, Christian humility or any other virtue, his reasoning is not clear. He required a recommendation from the rector of Standish, which he apparently considered a tiresome formality; and he was profoundly hurt when Mr. Perryn said no, on the grounds that Platt "had made a buffoon of himself, standing on tables, talking about religion." Apparently unrecorded, not found on JISC or OCLC.

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. First edition. 8vo pp [36],39,[4],42-65,[4],68-113,[4],116-308. Each sermon has a divisional title page. List of subscribers present. Contemporary half calf on marbled boards (marks to boards), marbled endpapers, attractively gilt spine with label, early signature of Halsey [Geddesden Hall], who is listed as one of the subscribers. Occasional foxing mark, but text otherwise internally clean. A very rare piece of religious Americana: Ogilvie explains in his preface that he was rector to Westover Parish in Virginia at the time of the revolution and was forced to flee, leaving his wife and children behind him. His wife then, when she attempted to join him after the ending of the war, died of an illness en route. These sermons were collected together and subscribed to to help alleviate him in his distress. Their interest now lies partly in the fact that we can envisage these sermons first being given in his church in Virginia, where he honed his craft. A rare item, ESTC gives only two locations in the US Harvard (two copies) and the University of Virginia.

First edition of BenjaminÂDisraeli's 1873 Inaugural Address bound together with the publisher's own hand-corrected proof correcting numerous literal and grammatical errors. Octavo, bound in one quarter morocco over marbled boards with gilt titles to the spine. The publisher's copy with numerous edits which are reflected in the first edition which is bound in before the proof. In very good condition. British statesman and Conservative politician Benjamin Disraeli served twice as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He played a central role in the creation of the modern Conservative Party, defining its policies and its broad outreach. Disraeli is remembered for his influential voice in world affairs, his political battles with the Liberal Party leader William Ewart Gladstone, and his one-nation conservatism or "Tory democracy". He made the Conservatives the party most identified with the glory and power of the British Empire. He is the only British prime minister to have been of Jewish birth. He was also a novelist, publishing works of fiction even as prime minister.

BIBLE IN ENGLISH (illustrator). [WYCLIFFE, John]. A New Biblia Pauperum. Being Thirty-Eight Woodcuts Illustrating the Life, Parables & Miracles of Our Blessed Lord & Saviour Jesus Christ, With the Proper Descriptions thereof, extracted from the Translation of the New Testament, by John Wiclif, Sometime Rector of Lutterworth. London: Printed at the Sign of The Grasshopper, by Unwin Brothers, The Gresham Press., 1877. First edition. One of 257 copies printed and signed by the Unwin Brothers. This being number 212. Two separate parts, each numbered and signed. The first being the prospectus with the title-page as above and [12] pp. (9 3/4 x 7 3/8 inches; 248 x 187 mm). The second and main part being the bible (10 x 7 7/8 inches; 253 x 200 mm) and comprising [3], 38, [3] leaves and with thirty-eight woodblock plates each facing a page of text. The text is printed in black with red initials on verso, recto blank. Woodblock plates are facing text, printed on recto, verso blank. Printed on special handmade paper, in Caxton Type No. 2. With a preface by A.P. Stanley. Original drab boards, bound to the style of the period. Boards stamped in blind, in a design taken from an early block book in the British Museum. Spine lettered in gilt. Two brass clasps, lacking the strap attachment. Top edge dyed maroon, others uncut. Boards a bit soiled and rubbed along edges. Spine with some chipping and some wear to head and tail-pieces. Prospectus in original printed paper wrappers. Some very light soiling. Overall a very good copy of this interesting production. This limited edition was produced for the occurrence of the Caxton Celebration of 1877. The original woodblocks dating sometime between 1470-1540 were purchased by the Unwin brothers and used to print the plates which pair up nicely with the facsimile text of Wiclif's New Testament of 1525. It is unknow what work these woodblocks were originally used for the printing of, as the have not been "recognized as belonging to any printed book". "In issuing them, combined with a suitable descriptive text, our thought has been to produce, as nearly as possible, a counterpart of an old Biblia Pauperum, and thus form a fitting memorial not only of the Caxton Celebration, but also of the Wiclif Quincentenart." (Unwin Brothers, from the note by the printer). Herbert, 2008. HBS 66069. $2,500.
