Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good+. First American Edition. First American edition, first printing. Signed by James Hilton on the front free endpaper and inscribed to Ralph D. Hartman in Hollywood in July 1939. Hartman's bookplate to front pastedown. [iv], 277 pp. Bound in publisher's black cloth with gilt lettering on spine and pictorial blindstamping on front board, orange topstain. Very Good with rubbing to gilt and moderate wear to extremities. Offsetting to endpapers and prelims from slips previously laid in, red penciled number and evidence of clipping removal to back endpapers. Contents lightly toned. In a scarce Very Good+ unclipped dust jacket with moderate wear and light toning and soiling. Anatomy of Wonder 2-52. The book that originated Shangri-La, a mystical Tibetan utopia where humans live for centuries. Hilton's fantasy was a bestseller that spawned two film adaptations and a host of imitations. He moved to California in the 1930s and worked in the film industry, gaining American citizenship in 1948. Ralph D. Hartman likely sent Hilton this copy from Ohio, where he worked as a credit manager while pursuing his hobby of book collecting. A 1952 newspaper profile of Hartman noted that he owned some 2,000 first and special editions, many of them signed. Signed.
