Seller: Sanctuary Books, A.B.A.A., New York, NY, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Good+. Calf; folio (294x194mm); two title-pages with ornamental woodcut border, and numbered leaves ([1] (title page "Les Commentaries"), [17] (prologue, table), [1]-401, [2] (blank, title page "Le Second Part", 403-565, [4] (table), 1-15 ("Vn Report fait.")), with woodcut decorative initials, printed in blackletter. Boards detached. First title page ("Commentaries") browned and very lightly chipped along the edges, early ownership signature and scribble along top margin; just a little faint marginal waterstaining; some early marginalia. Stamp of the Law Library of Los Angeles County on FFEP. An excellent candidate for rebinding. Scarce. Edmund Plowden (1518-1585) was highly respected and successful as a lawyer, but kept from the bench because he was Catholic. His reports were the first to include the names of the parties in the headings, providing a citation method that lawyers follow to this day; the first reports prepared for the press; the first collection of leading cases, "annotated by an editor at the head of the profession, which by including the pleadings enabled them to be studied in the context of litigation" (Biographical Dictionary of the Common Law). Reprinted numerous times, they were required reading for law students. In terms of their accuracy, organization, and balance, they were unsurpassed for centuries.
