Soft cover. Condition: USED_GOOD. 1st Edition. First US edition, first printing. Paperback. 21.5 × 14cm, 210pp. It is the latter years of World War II. Gertrude is convinced that she should be grateful to the superior, belittling Earl for marrying her; for her children, whose respect and allegiance belong to Earl; for the demeaning circumstances of her life, which she believes would be even harsher except for Earl. Milly is the independent, sometimes willful wife of Earl's successful brother. Milly is also a self-acknowledged lesbian. Apprehensively, Gertrude takes a wartime factory job. And soon she is compelled to confront the bondage of her life. Milly's life becomes ever more entwinded with Gertrude's, and she too discovers bonds in her life: those she must break, and those she must hold dear. Two singular women during the war years, when thousands discovered the missing dimension in their lives, and a few took the first steps to escape from their domestic prisons. Condition: Good condition. There is tanning to the top edge of the front and back covers but the book remains in strong readable condition.
Condition: UNSPECIFIED. [LGBTQ] Miller, Isabel (pseudonym of Alma Routsong). The Love of Good Women. Mass market paperback with illustrated wrappers. Tallahassee: The Naiad Press, 1986. Octavo. 210 pages total. First Edition. The story sets place in the later years of World War II, with two women discovering a missing dimension within their lives: true love. As a result, this book highlights the efforts of escaping a "domestic prison", one in which a woman is confined to the bounds of her heterosexual marriage. By the end of the story, both women are liberated, coming to term with their lesbian identities. Routsong was a prolific lesbian novelist, later becoming a lesbian activist. In 1971, the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Round Table of the American Library Association created the first award for LGBTQ+ books, the Stonewall Book Award, which celebrates books of exceptional merit that relate to LGBTQ+ issues. Patience and Sarah by Routsong was the first winner. A powerful Lesbian novel, this book is in very good condition.
