A 1736 copy of Florus' Roman History, with added notes and observations by Johannes Isacius Pontanus and Johann Freinsheim.Florus is known under several names: his first name is rendered as Publius and Lucius; his family name as Annius and Anneus; only the element "Florus" is always the same. He is credited with four works: a short, witty poem dedicated to the emperor Hadrian, who replied with a parody (both poems are quoted in the Historia Augusta); letters and poems; a dialogue on the question whether Virgil was an orator or a poet (only the preface remains); and the Epitome of the Histories of Titus Livy. Florus is best known for his version of the Roman History: strongly focused on warfare, it compares the history of the Roman empire to a life cycle: the reign of the kings is Rome's infancy, the conquest of Italy its youth, and as a Mediterranean power, Rome is grown-up.Although not always historically accurate when it comes to geographic and chronological details, it is still a truly useful text, as it gives us an impressions of the lost portions of Livy's History of Rome. The popularity of Florus text is due to similar reasons.Florus - Rome - Roman Empire - Roman History - Pontanus Half leather binding, 12 x 6.7 cm., signs of wear. Some foxing on first and last pages, some discoloration on pastedowns. Clean copy.

Small 8vo, 113 x 58 mms., pp. [4], 5 - 144 [145 - 170 notes], including engraved title-pages, which is dated 1672, contemporary calf, with gilt fleur-de-lys in centre of each cover and at four corners of binding and on spine, red leather label; binding worn, with joints cracked, top and base of spine chipped, and corners very worn, marbled paste-down end-papers, inscription on recto of front paste-down end-paper obscured at early state. Florus (there is some uncertainty about his exact name) compiled his epitome of Roman history from Livy. Early scholar-printers, e. g., Aldus, Vinetus, Salmasisu, Freinsheim, Graevius, and Duker were instrumental in establishing the text from extant manuscripts. Florus' text was popular for generations and used as a text well into the 19th century as an introduction to the history of Rome, despite a style which was said to be bombastic and belletristic. Copac and WorldCat record various copies with Simon Benard named as publisher on the title-page, but not this printing, which is clearly a different setting, as the Benard imprint is 187 pages.
