Immelmann, Boelcke, von Richtofen: alcuni di questi nomi, li ritroveremo nella Luftwaffe del Terzo Reich, fino agli ultimi giorni del millennio hitleriano, in una atmosfera da incubo. Dopo la sconfitta militare della Germania del Kaiser, la Luftwaffe diventa la Lufthansa, cioè una compagnia aerea civile, che è alla avanguardia in esperimenti che allora appaiono pazzeschi: il volo dei grandi dirigibili, per esempio. John Killen segue lo sviluppo e l'affermazione della Luftwaffe con una narrazione documentata e che prende il lettore.
