Immelmann, Boelcke, von Richtofen: alcuni di questi nomi, li ritroveremo nella Luftwaffe del Terzo Reich, fino agli ultimi giorni del millennio hitleriano, in una atmosfera da incubo. Dopo la sconfitta militare della Germania del Kaiser, la Luftwaffe diventa la Lufthansa, cioè una compagnia aerea civile, che è alla avanguardia in esperimenti che allora appaiono pazzeschi: il volo dei grandi dirigibili, per esempio. Goering, il playboy Udet, il bollente Kesselring, Jeschonnek: ecco i nomi dei creatori della forza aerea tedesca, di quella nuova e temibile Luftwaffe, che diviene un elemento determinante nella distruzione dell'esercito polacco e poi nello sfondamento del fronte in Francia, nel 1940. John Killen segue lo sviluppo e l'affermazione della Luftwaffe con una narrazione documentata e che prende il lettore. La Spagna era stata il banco di prova della Luftwaffe hitleriana, con la Legione Condor, con i primi bombardamenti terroristici sulle città (Madrid, Guernica); adesso tutta l'Europa è sotto il terrore degli aerei tedeschi.
