The text block is in fine condition, with no tears, dogears, or marks. An inscription and signature of the poet is on the first free endpaper. There is no bookplate nor signature of a prior owner. Not a library book or remainder. The illustrated wraps are in fine condition. 7 x 4 ½, 180 pages, 10 ounces XX [From the back cover] I have lived several lives so far, each one small, each one private, each one a kind of struggle to impose my will upon my world. Recently, my hands began to open. They knew before I that there is much to release and much to accept. In between, in the emptiness, is God's grace. These poems make up the texts that are the text of the lives that have brought me to where I am. I have held these poems tightly in vain preparation for better poems. Now, I open my hand. XX Lyman Grant was founder and editor of MAN! magazine, the leading newsstand magazine devoted to men's issues and relationships. Previously, he edited Ihe Letters of Roy Bedichek and New Growth: Contemporary Short Stories by Texas Writers. His poems have appeared in Sulphur River, Icarus, Enkidu, and in an essay published in Through the Fire by The Crossing Press. He teaches at Austin Community College and lives happily with his wife and son. Inscribed by Author(s).

Willcox served as an officer in Company B, Third Michigan Calvary, during the Civil War. The title comes from a "bold and spirited speech" entitled "The South in War Time" Willcox gave in 1863 "to a packed crowd of Confederate soldiers and civilians at a courthouse in Lexington, Tennessee." From the blurb on the front flap: "According to the major, it was the first and only instance in which a Union officer spoke directly across the bloody chasm."
