C'est un artisan napolitain qui a gravé le motif de la levrette, symbole préféré de la duchesse pour orner la couverture de ses mémoires. Jean de Bonnot: "La duchesse d'Abrantès est sans doute l'écrivain le plus passionnant de son époque. Elle n'a pas été une admiratrice aveugle et fanatique de Napoléon, elle a su au contraire distinguer le génie, les fautes, les défaillances. Elle a formulé des jugements critiques que des historiens impartiaux ont recueillis et ratifiés. Son indépendance d'esprit et la liberté de son style incisif lui ont valu qu'en 1813 l'Empereur tente de l'éloigner de Paris comme il l'avait déjà fait pour Madame de Staël et Madame Récamier. Mais elle ose désobéir à l'Empereur et reste dans la capitale (.) Mariée à Junot, qui devient fou et finit par se suicider en 1813, elle commence une carrière littéraire pour pallier ses multiples revers de fortune, et ce grâce à la collaboration d'un jeune écrivain, encore méconnu à l'époque, du nom de Honoré de Balzac. C'est ainsi qu'elle devient la maîtresse du jeune Balzac vers 1828, après s'être longtemps refusée à lui."
