Condition: Good. THE BILL THAT TRIGGERED THE TRAIL OF TEARS - Octavo, 9 inches high by 5-1/2 inches wide. Softcover, bound in printed self-wrappers. Once likely bound, there are stab marks and tiny remnants of paper along the spine. 32 pages. There is some scattered foxing, particularly to the cover page and last page, and the l…ast page is partially detached. Good. First edition (Sabin 34663).Bill No. 287 was "A bill to provide for the removal of the Indian tribes within any of the states and territories, and for their permanent settlement west of the river Mississippi."--p. 31-32. The bill, known as The Indian Removal Act of 1830, was supported by President Andrew Jackson, white southerners and some state governments, particularly Georgia. Jackson signed it into law on May 28, 1830. As a result, more than 60,000 Native Americans from 18 tribes were forcibly removed from their homes in an act of state-sponsored ethnic cleansing and suffered a dangerous journey westward which became known as the Trail of Tears.At head of title: 21st Congress, 1st session. A graphic account of the slave rebellion in Dutch Guiana, 1772- 1777, illustrated with 81 engravings (including 3 folding maps) after d…rawings by the author by William Blake (13 with an additional 3 attributed to him), Bartolozzi, Benedetti, Barlow, and others. This has been called this "one of the richest contemporary accounts of a plantation society in the Americas." According to the DNB, Stedman's narrative is "one of the most vivid indictments of slavery that have been penned." Stedman also depicts the social and natural history of the area in detail, and many of the engravings illuminate his writings on these subjects. Blake's work, among the finest that he did for hire, are primarily powerful portraits of slaves. (A graphic account of the slave rebellion in Dutch Guiana, 1772- 1777, illustrated with 81 engravings (including 3 folding maps) after drawings by the author by William Blake (13 with an additional 3 attributed to him), Bartolozzi, Benedetti, Barlow, and others. Offering an 8 x 13 document March 31st, 1791, signed by THOMAS MIFFLIN, governor of Pennsylvania, who also signed the U.S. Constitution, and SAMUEL LYON, who became a deputy surveyor, "Whereas JOSEPH THORNBURGH.has requested to take up one hundred eighty-six acres of land including an improvement adjoining…land of Michael Ege and others in Allen & Middletown Townships in the county of Cumberland. (PROVIDED the land is not within the last purchase made of the INDIANS) for which he agrees to pay immediately into the office of the Receiver General , for the use of this state, at the rate of ten pounds per hundred acres, in gold, silver, paper money.or certificates, agreeably to an act of the assembly.These are therefore to authorize and require you to survey or cause to be surveyed.at the place aforesaid.To DANIEL BRODHEAD, Esquire Surveyor General." LYON has signed the document for himself and for Brodhead. MIFFLIN (1744-1800) was also a Revolutionary War General, Washington's Aide-de-Camp and Quartermaster General. He was also President of the Continental Congress, where he served two terms and was 1st Governor of Pennsylvania. After signing the U.S. Constitution in 1787, he replaced Benjamin Franklin as president of the Supreme Executive Council of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. On November 25, 1789, he was elected president of the Constitutional Convention for Pennsylvania. LYON, became a deputy surveyor under his uncle, Col. John Armstrong; appointed, May 22, 1770, by provincial authority, a magistrate for Milford township; re-appointed justice of the peace, June 19, 1771, by the "Supreme Executive Council," who made all appointments previous to the formation of the State Government, in 1790. On April 3, 1780, Col. Lyon was appointed commissioner of purchases for the Revolutionary army for the county of Cumberland, and on July 7, 1780, assistant commissioner of purchases. Expected toning. Fold breaks reinforced with archival tape. A few chips to the external edges. A wonderful document with a strong signature from an important Founding Father.
