Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. Meeting with volcanoes around the world, a volcanologist interprets their messages for humankind. In Mountains of Fire, Clive Oppenheimer invites readers to stand with him in the shadow of an active volcano. Whether he is scaling majestic summits, listening to h…issing lava at the crater's edge, or hunting for the far-flung ashes from Earth's greatest eruptions, Oppenheimer is an ideal guide, offering readers the chance to tag along on the daring, seemingly-impossible journeys of a volcanologist. In his eventful career as a volcanologist and filmmaker, Oppenheimer has studied volcanoes around the world. He has worked with scientists in North Korea to study Mount Paektu, a volcano name sung in national anthems on both sides of the Demilitarized Zone. He has crossed the Sahara to reach the fabled Tiéroko volcano in the Tibesti Mountains of Chad. He spent months camped atop Antarctica's most active volcano, Mount Erebus, to record the pulse of its lava lake. Mountains of Fire reveals how volcanic activity is entangled with our climate and environment, as well as our economy, politics, culture, and beliefs. These adventures and investigations make clear the dual purpose of volcanology--both to understand volcanoes for science's sake and to serve the communities endangered and entranced by these mountains of fire.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. First Edition First Printing. One of the very first series books created for young girls at the turn of the 20th century, drawing on the popularity of the very first social organization for females, the Camp Fire Girls, which had been modeled on the Boy Scouts. The g…irls in the books, all from Cleveland, Ohio, engaged in wholesome activities while camping, exploring, adventuring, or doing service work. This is book #3 in a series of only 10 penned by Hildegard G. Frey, the only ones officially endorsed by the Camp Fire Girls Organization. Other writers had written previous stories, & would continue to after these. From one young girl's collection, the ones we are offering here are all in their original First State bindings & DJs. This book is a FIRST EDITION, unknown printing, from 1916, listing other 3 titles in the series published same year, but no further, in 234 pages (+ 14 pages of ads for other children's series in rear), with a glossy frontispiece by J. Watson Davis (better known for illustrating the Horatio Alger series). Hardcover 8vo 12mo (5.25" x 7.5") has light green cloth-covered boards decorated on front & spine with images of Camp Fire girls engaged in various activities, lettered in black & red to front & spine. Condition is VG+: very clean, binding strong & square, hinges secure, pages creamy white with age-appropriate tanning, but completely unmarked. Modest bumping to corners & rubbing to both ends of spine, with slight paper loss to heel. The unclipped First State original DJ is Fair, missing most of lower spine & a section of back cover across top edge, chipped at all corners; nicely protected in new clear mylar cover free! Our photos show the exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have! Same day shipping on all orders received by 2 pm weekdays (Pacific time); later orders, weekends & holidays ship very next business day. Davis, J. Watson (illustrator).
