'What shall we do to be saved?' There are several possible answers. Two are both primary and primitive: the recourse to magic; and the belief in a new world order imposed from above, 'a millennium' as it is called in Christendom. These two responses to social distress and cultural shock are seen most vividly where 'ThirdWorld' peoples have felt the impact of the expanding West, where they have encountered modernity and interpreted it either as magic or as the millennium, or which, by magic or by faith in a millennium, they have sought to dispel. Yet magic does not work and the millennium does not come. In this study, Bryan Wilson shows what happens when magic proves inadequate and when prophecy fails. The two basic responses change, and men in the Third World find other modes of adjustment to the alien culture that has engulfed them. Using insights drawn from his earlier studies of sects in Western Christendom, the author shows how changing social needs give rise to these new religious responses: he examines newly arising religious movements from Papua to Brazil, and from the American Indian frontier to the West Coast of Africa. Rejecting both simple chronology and cultural peculiarities as an adequate guide to these movements, he seeks to make sense of them from a sociological perspective and provides theoretical unity and coherence to the study of fascinatingly diverse religious phenomena, ranging from Hau Hau to Mau Mau and from Peyotism to Pentecostalism. Students of social change ~sociologists, historians, political scientists and anthropologists~will find much of importance in this work, which will command no less attention from social psychologists and students of religion.
