Decorated red cloth cover; gilt titling, with raised hand in white. Some illustrations. Part I includes various magic effects (The Rice and Water Trick, The Demon Digits, The Great Book Mystery, The Crystal Balls, etc.); Part II is devoted to the many ingenious inventions of Hoffmann's friend and performer Joseph Michael Hartz (1836-1903), whom he calls primarily an "apparatus" conjuror, but of the first order. Hartz was awarded many medal & diamond pins from royalty all over the world, such was his skill. His Devil of a Hat (a hat tick) is one of many described in the book. Cover is rubbed over all, especially to rear; rubbed to board at corners and 4 tiny spots rubbed on front. Spine is sunned. Front pastedown endpaper has 3 lines of handwriting and original bookseller sticker (reddish stain at bottom corner); ffep has previous owner's name (which has left ghost impression on half-title page underneath it. Half-title and rear free endpaper are quite toned. A small spot on each of rear endpapers. Just a few pages have slight stains; pgs. 212-213 have dark stain in gutter. Still a nice tight copy! Better than it sounds! Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Book.
