The revised edition of Fowles' masterpiece, a psychological novel about a young Englishman entangled in the manipulations of a mysterious Greek island recluse. Inscribed from the author. A fine copy in near fine jacket. Provenance: Jennie Vine (inscribed to her from the author and with her striginistic bookplate). Signed. Book.
First edition thus (first revised edition, published 11 years after the first edition). Signed by the author, with added material. Hardcover. Fore and bottom edges slightly toned, with a touch of foxing on the former, a tiny tissue repair to the top of the front inner hinge, otherwise near fine in fine price-clipped dustjacket with one small professionally closed tear at the tail of the spine. This revised edition of one of Fowles's major works has an informative 6-page foreword laying out the author's reasons for the revision: "not in any major thematic or narrative sense.but it is rather more than a stylistic revision". This copy is flat-signed on the title-page: "John Fowles/16.3.2000" and the late date of signing is explained by the accompanying post-card from the author's 'local' bookshop "Lymelight Books & Prints" of Lyme Regis, Dorset, where Fowles lived, making for a nice association. The postcard's recto side has a handsome b/w photo of Fowles sitting in his garden (presumably), and was taken by a Susan Collins, dated 1997. On the verso of the post-card, the bookshop's manager, Nigel Cozens, has written to the customer to whom this signed copy was sent: "12.4.2000/ Dear Sir or Madam/ Please find enclosed your books as ordered, hope you enjoy them. John is a friend and visitor to our shop and signs books on the premises, regrettably he is a little frail now, and signature varies considerably from day to day and even from book to book. Regards, Nigel Cozens". The signature on the title-page is indeed a little shaky, but unmistakably the author's. Fowles died in 2005, making this a poignant late signing. This copy comes with a privately made facsimile dustjacket of the wonderful Tom Adams artwork for the first edition of "The Magus" in 1966 (that jacket design is used here on the revised version's endpapers), and this facsimile jacket has protected the purple of the present edition's spine so that it is pretty much completely unfaded.
