Contact seller5-star sellerHalf Leather. Condition: Very Good+ binding. Octavo. xiv, 380 pp., frontis, plates. First edition. Finely bound in contemporary blue/green levant goatskin with corners and marbled paper over boards; top edge gilt. A very handsome binding, though the spine has evenly toned to tan; light rubbing including some abrasion to the marb…led paper over the rear board; contents clean and binding sound. Laid in is a typed letter signed by Puleston on Navy Department letterhead to Confederate Captain Samuel A'Court Ashe (1840-1938) thanking him for his reminiscences of Mahan, Ashe's lifelong friend. Additionally, Puleston asks Ashe in this letter a series of questions. Puleston writes, "I am trying very hard to get a good picture in my own mind of Mahan as a Midshipman, and I think you are the only person that can really help me." And surely this is true due to both Ashe and Mahan's friendship and the fact that there couldn't have been many alive who could speak with first-hand knowledge of Mahan in these years. A very nice copy of this biography of the naval officer best known for his historical writings. And here with this relevant TLS.
