Per the preface, the author wrote this "description of sea life in the '70s, aboard a deep-water ship". With incidents noted from his journal kept during his voyages, noting that "the account of my first deep-water voyage may be accepted as a faithful description of life on board an American sailing ship fifty years ago" (late 19th century). 377 pages, illustrated. Minor wear, light age-toning within, spine strip is sunned. DATED, INSCRIBED & SIGNED BY AUTHOR. Book.

Dedicatory note signed by Alan Villiers on FFEP. Small bookseller stamp at bottom of title page. Faint foxing on prelims, otherwise a very nice signed copy of the first edition. Scarce. 25.3 x 18.8. Photos taken during the cruise of the "Joseph Conrad" in 1934-35-36 and on the Danish schoolship "Georg Stage".
