Mass market paperback. Condition: fair. Pocket paperbk, 541 pages. Wraps, illus., maps, charts, index, covers soiled and somewhat worn, pages darkened. William Henry Stevenson (1 June 1924 - 26 November 2013) was a British-born Canadian author and journalist. His 1976 book A Man Called Intrepid was about William Stephenson (no relation) and was a best-seller. It was made into a 1979 mini-series starring David Niven. Stevenson followed it in 1983 with another book, Intrepid's Last Case. He published his autobiography in 2012. In 1976 Stevenson released the book, 90 Minutes at Entebbe. It was about Operation Entebbe, an operation where Israeli commandos landed at night at Entebbe Airport in Uganda and succeeded in rescuing the passengers of an airliner hi-jacked by Palestinian militants, while incurring very few casualties. Stevenson's "instant book" was written, edited, printed and available for sale within weeks of the event it described. Sir William Samuel Stephenson, CC, MC, DFC (23 January 1897 - 31 January 1989) was a Canadian soldier, airman, businessman, inventor, spymaster, and the senior representative of British Security Coordination (BSC) for the entire western hemisphere during World War II. He is best known by his wartime intelligence codename Intrepid. Many people consider him to be one of the real-life inspirations for James Bond. Ian Fleming himself once wrote, "James Bond is a highly romanticized version of a true spy. The real thing is . William Stephenson." As head of the British Security Coordination, Stephenson handed over British scientific secrets to Franklin D. Roosevelt and relayed American secrets to Winston Churchill. In addition, Stephenson has been credited with changing American public opinion from an isolationist stance to a supportive tendency regarding America's entry into World War II. 1st Ballantine Edition. Light Creasing on Front, Rear Covers, Spine; Front, Rear Covers, Spine Lightly Chipped; Spine Slightly Cocked; Slight Yellowing Due to Age. SYNOPSIS: He masterminded the international intelligence network that halted the Nazi juggernaut. Sir William Stephenson, the man called Intrepid, and his astonishing activities are the subject of this book. Because he sought anonymity, held no military rank and wore no uniform after 1918, he never publicly displayed the decorations and medals awarded to him. He holds the (British) Military Cross, Distinguished Flying Cross, 1914-1915 Star, General Service Medal, World War I Victory Medal; (French) Commander of the Legion of Honor, (Belgian) Croix de Guerre with Palms; (U.S.) Presidential Medal for Merit (Sir William was the first non-American to receive this decoration); (British) The Badge of Knighthood. William Stevenson, no relative of Sir William despite the similarity of their names, is a Canadian, although born in England. He is a distinguished journalist, having been a foreign correspondent and bureau chief for British and Canadian newspapers. More recently he has been a television writer and producer and is, as well, the author of seven previously published books. His most recent journalistic achievement was 90 Minutes at Entebbe, the dynamic account of Israel's stunning rescue mission. He was a naval flyer during World War II and met Sir William on special assignment to intelligence. They have remained fast friends ever since, and Sir William entrusted his unique and invaluable files to William Stevenson with complete authority and discretion to write this selective narrative.
