Condition: Overall very good. No stated edition. Two suites of captions and engraved plates from the Encyclopedie: 6p + many ills. on 33 pls., and 2p + many ills. on 7 pls. (1 double page). In French. From the collection of dressage master Dr.H.L.M. Van Schaik, with his blind stamp. Spine and outer pages lightly foxed, a little old worming to some bottom magins. The first group covers horsemanship and stable care. Most of the plates illustrate manege riding, based on Parrocel's plates in La Gueriniere; the others show saddles, bridles, stable equipment, and stable design. The second group covers shoeing, with many illustrations of shoes and farriery tools. The plates are complete, and all are very good, rich impressions. Ca. 10 x 15 inches. Folio. 11 x 16.5 inches. 7 + 2 + 2 pp. letterpress. All text in French. Bound in recent brown morocco over green marbled boards. A little foxing of letterpress pages and margins, but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 33 + 7 + 10 engraved plates (total 50). Some plates in the first manege section have been bound out of sequence but all are present as called for. Plate 24 is wrongly numbered as 22. Fifty plates covering horsemanship, farriery and wheelwrighting extracted from the Encyclopédie, ou dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers, edited by Denis Diderot (1713-84) and Jean d'Alembert (1717-83) and published in its entirety, 1751-72. It was the first encylopedia to have numerous named contributors and the first to depict the mechanical arts. In addition to the main articles, eleven volumes of plates were published, 1762-72. These three sections of plates cover horsemanship and equitation, farriery and wheelwrighting. The first illustrates the riding techniques and the stables, saddles, harness and accessories associated with the manege. The second section illustrates the work of the smith farrier, the shoeing and basic veterinary care of horses and the making of horseshoes; the third depicts the work of the wheelwright, including the tyring of a wheel, the forge and the ironwork used on carts, wagons and carriages.
