Seller: Chap Books, LEWES, United Kingdom
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 4th Edition. Originally published by John Murray in 1958, Mani is one of Patrick Leigh Fermor s highly engaging and wildly readable travel journals, this particular edition with a frontispiece by John Craxton, Fermor s artist friend who is featured in CHAP Winter 23. The Mani is cut off from the rest of Greece by the towering range of the Taygetus Mountains, hemmed in by the Aegian and Ionian Seas. This rocky central prong of the Peloponnese is the southernmost point of Mediterranean Europe, and Leigh Fermor brings every craggy rock, twinkly-eyed old lady and cobbled street to life with his vivid, passionate prose.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Photos by Joan Eyres Monsell (Fermor), jacket by John Craxton (illustrator). 1st Edition. First published in 1958, this is a fourth impression of 1967. Some edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, jacket has later lamination applied (quite skilfully), lamination lifting slightly along spine folds, some browning to page fore edges, however fabulous jacket by John Craxton bright, unfaded and intact, not price clipped (35s), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy for its age. 320pp, illustrated with photos and maps. Sir Patrick Michael Leigh Fermor, DSO, OBE (1915- 2011), also known as Paddy Fermor, was a British author, scholar and soldier who played a prominent role behind the lines in the Cretan resistance during the Second World War. At the age of 18, Leigh Fermor decided to walk the length of Europe, from the Hook of Holland to Constantinople. He set off in December 1933, shortly after Hitler had come to power in Germany, with a few clothes, several letters of introduction, the Oxford Book of English Verse and a volume of Horace's Odes. He slept in barns and shepherds' huts, but also was invited by landed gentry and aristocracy into the country houses of Central Europe. He experienced hospitality in many monasteries along the way. He finally arrived in Constantinople in January 1935. Patrick Leigh Fermor was widely regarded as 'Britain's greatest living travel writer' during his lifetime, A BBC journalist once described him as 'a cross between Indiana Jones, James Bond and Graham Greene.' During the war, working for SOE, he achieved lasting fame for his kidnapping, with Stanley Moss, of Nazi General Heinrich Kreipe on Crete. This is an account of his life and travels in a remote and cut off part of southern Greece. Scarce, even in this later impression.
