Für das Ganze des manichäischen Systems wie für einzelne mythographische Züge sind dabei eine Fülle von Parallelen aus den verschiedensten Religionen und Kulturkreisen aufgezeigt und dementsprechend verschiedene Ableitungen erarbeitet worden. Sie sind bekannt und brauchen im einzelnen nicht genannt zu werden. Es genügt hier, an die wichtigste Alternative zu erinnern, an die Ableitung Manis entweder von hellenistischem oder von iranischem Denken. Diese Fragestellung wirkt bis heute nach, obwohl man allmählich davon abgeht, Mani in dieser Weise nur von einer bestimmten Überlieferung abhängig zu sehen. Zweifellos haben jedoch alle Arbeiten dieser Art Erhebliches zum Verständnis des Manichäismus beigetragen. Sie leiden jedoch notwendigerweise alle daran, daß sie Texte zum Vergleich heranziehen müssen, die nicht aus Manis unmittelbarer Zeit und Umgebung stammen, sondern manchmal viele Jahrhunderte von ihm entfernt sind. Das schließt Fehlerquellen schon im Ansatz ein.
