Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. Good HC pamphlet bound with Very Good map. 2nd edition. Brown pseudo-marbled paper over boards with red leather fore corners; spine probably once red leather is rebound with red cambric cloth tape; white hand lettered titles and library number on spine. Generally clean covers; some rubbing wear on covers with few small areas of paper lift; rubbed at fore corners, boards exposed; tightly bound; library matter on front and rear pastedowns; 'discard' stamp on obverse face of bound in map and on rear free end paper; cloth tape reinforcement at front and rear inside hinges; interior clean with very limited, light foxing; all leaves pierced at inside edge where probably once side-stab bound as pamphlet. McClelland 1854 'pocket' map bound in before title page is in Very Good condition. Map is 13.25 inch x 17 inch (34cm x 44cm) with an 8.5cm square inset map of the District of Columbia at lower left corner; map shows block numbers, wards and major buildings and includes an index of points of interest. Scale is about 1:21,500 (7.5cm = 1 mile). Map is bright, clean and complete; cloth binding into book affects left side edge outside margin except small area in upper left corner where tape is inside margin but in blank area of map; 1 inch closed tear at middle left side; red 'discard' stamp on obverse face bleeds through slightly at top center. Title in lower right corner reads: "Map | of the | City of Washington | Established as the Permanent Seat of the | Government | of the | United States | of | America | 1854. | Scale | Engraved and Published by D. McClelland. Washington.".

Broadside map, 16 3/4 x 20 inches, a plat map of the city of Washington, with major streets named and major public and governmental buildings represented, the whole enclosed within a narrow bold rule border. Inset map of the District of Columbia and a second inset giving references to key spots in the city (banks, churches, parks, cemeteries, etc.). Phillips, p. 1020. Not in the online Rumsey collection. OCLC locates three copies of this 1855 issue (District of Columbia Public, Library of Congress, George Washington); previously issued in 1846 and 1850. Separation at center fold and other corner folds repaired on verso (with a little loss from the image), chip in outer margin (not affecting text); a good copy of a scarce Washington, D.C., folding pocket map. Folded into 12mo gilt-stamped cloth boards (rubbed). (#5156).
