Add to basketLarge hand-coloured woodblock-printed folding cadastral map (134.5 x 122 cm), compass rose and distance chart and day by day listing of events in Edo for 1859. Folds to c 28 x 20 cm between original brown on grey patterned cloth covered boards with printed paper title label to upper. Text in Japanese. Small hole to fold at lower… lef, Meguro district, generally very good. This monumental map of Edo exemplifies Japanese cartographic practice as a form of archival memory. Originally conceived in Genroku 9 (1696) by the publishing venture of Okumura Kihei and edited by Takai Ranzan, it established a canonical spatial model of the shogunal capital. The map continued to circulate for more than a century through successive editorial states, first in a Bunsei 5 (1822) revision and, as in the present example, in a final Man'en-era update of ca. 186061. The sheet thus functions as a visual palimpsest: a seventeenth-century urban scheme preserved in woodblocks yet repeatedly reworked to accommodate the realities of a changing nineteenth-century metropolis. The importance of this state is further underscored by its publisher, Izumo-ji Manjiro, officially appointed bookseller to the Tokugawa shogunate. Through his agency, the map was transformed from the intellectual project of an individual editor into an institutionalised urban record. The survival on the map of the formula Takai Ranzan zu no and Genroku kyunen kyuban asserts continuity with the 1696 original, while the title slip Man'en kaisei on the cover proclaims this issue as the last pre-Meiji "update" of the Ranzan tradition. These late Edo reissues do not merely document the city; they actively rewrite it, presenting Edo as a layered archive in which Genroku memory, Bunsei revision, and Man'en-era administrative modernity converge at the threshold of the Meiji Restoration.

Add to basketA rather rare, Early to Mid Edo Period edition of the Tōkaidō Bunken Ezu, also known as A Charted Map of the Tokaido, being a married set containing four first edition volumes from the Genroku Era, with the second volume being the 1751 Second Edition from the Horeki Era. As the title would entail, the work is a series of five vo…lumes of scaled (1 to 12,000) maps which shows the Tokaido in its entirety, depicting the long and winding road connecting Edo to the capital, Kyoto, and the 53 stations along the way. The maps are beautiful, being rather detailed and historically accurate to detail, with numerous landmarks, locations, and teahouses marked, and the work itself was used as a travel guide, though not for conventional travel usage along the road. The first volume has also been partially colored by a contemporary hand. Each station has been labelled and goes into additional detail to show various traders, brokers, and travel fees, as well as distances to different locations or other stations. Adding another level of liveliness, the work also depicts travelers upon the road, to give a sense of realism, and how the Tokaido might have looked during the Edo Period. The volumes are broken down into the following sections: Book 1: Edo to Odawara Station Book 2: Odawara station to Fuchu Station Book 3: Fuchu station to Yoshida Station Book 4: Yoshida station to Kameyama Station Book 5: Kameyama station to Kyoto Complete sets of the first edition are rare outside of Japanese holdings, and copies at auction appear to be extremely scarce, with only a singular set sold at Christies at their October 16th, 1990 Sale, Lot 502, for 24,200 USD. Five volumes in orihon format (28 x 16.8 cm, but 26.7 x 15 cm for Vol II), 40, 44, 52, 46, 40 leaves These volumes are in very good shape, with rubbing and wear to the bindings, with a bit of paper loss to the corners and edges of the covers. There are minor worm tracks to the margins and edges, partially obscuring a bit of imagery at times. There is very little foxing or staining throughout. Ochikochi Doin; Hishikawa Moronobu (illustrator).

Add to basketVery large hand coloured folding map, 200 x 189.5cm at the largest section, six panels have been removed from one corner while another two and a half panels have been included along one edge to show the reach of the city. Some insect damage repaired with washi but overall in very good condition. An exceptionally beautiful and de…tailed rare map of Tokyo in the Edo period (the latter half of the 17th century). This remarkable delicately executed map of Edo around the 1660s offers a wealth of detailed information about the city and its population during the early Edo period. Hundreds of names of landholders are neatly recorded. Family crests or mons are shown across Edo indicating locations of daimyo's (or feudal lord) mansions, temples depicted with even ferry routes named! Edo Castle takes centre stage, with the Sumida River flowing from north to south and emptying into the bay. Here, several boats are delicately illustrated in colour, some carrying images of lucky gods. Prominently displayed in red is the mansion of Sakai Shurinosuke, namely Sakai Tadanao (1630-1682), who received the rank of Shuri-Taiyfu (????) from the Emperor. He was a daimyo from the domain of Obama (Fukui Prefecture) and successor to his prominent father, Sakai Tadakatsu (1587-1662). Tadakatsu served as one of the most trusted ministers of Tokugawa Iemitsu (1604-1651), the third shogun. His son, Tadanao, was active as a daimyo between 1656 and 1677. A handwritten section at the top right details the Sakai family's fire responsibility area. The borders are defined by street names and landmarks, and distances are listed from the main mansion and residence to Ushigome-mon, one of Edo Castle's gates. In summary, the area of responsibility is approximately 10 cho (1 kilometre) east to west and 12 cho (1.2 kilometres) north to south. Though not explicitly dated beyond the mention of "November," the map was probably created in the 1660s. The Meireki Fire (1657) caused a large scale devastation around the castle and the Tokugawa government heightened the need of fire fighting activities in the capital. The government, firstly, allocated responsible areas for each daimyo to carry out fire fighting and, secondly, started to produce large maps of Edo based on actual measurement. Consequently, this map was most probably produced around the 1660s. Furthermore, the dating is supported by the presence of Ryogoku Bridge, built in 1659, and the absence of Shin-Ohashi Bridge, which wasn't constructed until 1693. Additionally, the map provides detailed information on residents, street names around the castle and other areas, with major temples and shrines highlighted in colour illustrations. This truly exceptional map leaves many questions unanswered. Indeed who gathered the vast amount of information to be found on the map? What was the exact purpose behind its creation? The more we examine this map the more we learn and the more questions we have. However it is very clear that this rare and beautiful manuscript map provides a depth of information about Edo in the 1660s rarely found, making the map a vital key to the city at this period. A handsome map which calls for more research. We have not been able to find a similar map nor have we ever handled anything comparable.

Add to basketA large woodcut map of Edo (Tokyo) with fine handcolouring, on joined and folded paper. The map is breathtaking in its detail and features many paintings of important landmarks, temples, bridges and people, who are often pictured working or fishing from boats on the waterways running through Tokyo. A stunning and very rare woodb…lock map beautifully and unusually handcoloured. Roads, blocks, buildings, open areas, canals and waterways, are all vividly laid out on this huge and most impressive map. 123.5 by 149.5 cm., folded within paper covers, folds to 28 by 18 cm, now preserved in a fine clamshell box. A remarkably well preserved and very rare item, with some light rubbing due to age and as to be expected. A bit of old worming or light soiling and occasional small repairs, but in all quite astonishing in its quality and beautifully preserved with bright and vivid colour and detail. AN EXTRAORDINARY ITEM, REMARKABLE FOR BOTH ITS CARTOGRAPHIC DETAIL AND ITS ARTISTIC BEAUTY. The wood block printing shows land tenures of Daimyo and Hatamoto. It also shows temples and shrines, includes a distance chart and descriptive listing of Daimyo showing crests and halberds. There is also a inset of the eastern portion of Edo.
