Add to basketColoured; one or two short tears to the edges of the paper and now expertly repaired, signs of old folds from book, trimmed close as is often the case, but with enough blank paper to facilitate framing, overall an excellent example on thicker paper than usual. One of the most decorative maps of Oxfordshire available, produced by Dr Robert Plot, a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Oxford and the first keeper of the Ashmolean Museum. Engraved by Michael Burghers and surrounded by 172 coats of arms of the county's gentry and Oxford colleges. Published in Plot's 'The Natural History of Oxfordshire' from 1676, the earliest natural history of the county. The book contains a description of all parts of the county, selected historical events, people, flora and fauna and other curiosities. The work also contains descriptions and images of fossils found in the county including the first known illustration of a dinosaur bone.
