Detailed double hemisphere World map richly decorated with allegorical vignettes signifying the four classical elements and a central image of deist cosmography.The map also features the well delineated rivers of the Mississippi, Ohio, Rio Grande, and St. Lawrence. The Great Lakes are discernable. California is drawn as an island. The northwest portion of North America remains blank, as well as the southeast portion of Australia. The mythical land of Iesso is depicted north of Japan.Pieter van der Aa (1659-1733) was a Dutch publisher best known for preparing maps and atlases, though he also printed pirated editions of foreign bestsellers and illustrated volumes.
