Condition: Very Good. Chagall, Marc (illustrator). [Lithograph, Fine Art] Seven Marc Chagall Lithographs from the Bible Series, Marc Chagall, N.P., N.D., various sizes. Seven black and white lithograph prints; five are approximately 11 x 14 inches, with two larger prints measuring 11 x 15.75 inches and 11 x 16.75 inches. Some have minor creasing and toning to edges; very good condition overall. This lot contains seven unsigned lithograph prints by Marc Chagall. The images are from his Bible Series, which he created from 1931-1939 and 1952-1956, after traveling to the Holy Land in 1931. Chagall was commissioned to illustrate the Bible Series by art dealer and publisher Ambroise Vollard, who believed the Bible was "the most important piece of literature of all time and the cornerstone of Western tradition" (Andrew Weiss Gallery). Marc Chagall (1887-1985) was a Belarusian and French artist who created works in many different mediums including painting, drawing, stained glass, ceramics, and tapestries. He began making lithograph prints in 1922 and worked with master lithograph printer Charles Sorlier to push the boundaries of color lithography. Chagall was an early modernist painter and was associated with the School of Paris. He was a contemporary of Pablo Picasso, who said of Chagall, "When Matisse dies, Chagall will be the only painter left who understands what color really is. I'm not crazy about his roosters and asses and flying violinists, and all the folklore, but his canvases are really painted, not just thrown together. there's never been anybody since Renoir who has the feeling for light that Chagall has.".

Mit 8 Farbtafeln. 59, (5) SS. Illustrierte Broschur mit Schutzumschlag. 4to.

Jewish Telegraphic Agency, April 2, 1985:"Marc Chagall, the Russian born Jewish painter, many of whose masterpieces were on Jewish themes, was buried today at Saint Paul De Vence, the village in the south of France where he lived and worked for the past 20 years. He died last Thursday at the age of 97.There were no religious rites. Chagall's widow, Valentina Brodsky, said the artist had specifically requested that there be no religious service at his burial. A family member recited the Kaddish but without the required minyan. The funeral was attended by a handful of family members and close friends and by diplomats of three nations. Two representatives of the Soviet Embassy in Paris were present as were French Foreign Minister Roland Dumas, Minister of Culture Jack Lang and Israel's Ambassador to France, Ovadia Soffer.".
