About this Item: SKIRA, Italy, 2017. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. Some Aesthetic Decisions is an exhibition featuring works by artists that explore issues of beauty, value, and judgment. One hundred years ago, Dada artist Marcel Duchamp forever changed the nature of art by anonymously submitting Fountain in 1917, a porcelain urinal signed R. Mutt as an artwork to the exhibition of the Society of Independent Artists in New York. The show organizers rejection of Fountain ignited a controversy that persists today about the definition of art and who gets to pass judgment. The NSU Art Museum in Fort Lauderdale, Florida marks this centenary by organizing Some Aesthetic Decisions, a show of artworks by Cory Arcangel, John Baldessari, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Sophie Calle, Duchamp, Judy Fiskin, Claire Fontaine, Mike Kelley, Jeff Koons, Joseph Kosuth, Jorge Pardo, Andy Warhol, and others. Curated by the NSU Art Museum s director and chief curator Bonnie Clearwater. Exhibition Schedule: NSU Art Museum, Fort Lauderdale May 14-September 3, 2017. Seller Inventory # AAS9788857234793

About this Item: tredition GmbH, 2017. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: French . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.On April 9th, 1917, a urinal was delivered as an art work to the First Annual Exhibition of the Independents in New York. The item received the title Fountain. It was signed R. Mutt, which turned out to be a pseudonym. About twenty years later, the authorship of this work was attributed to Marcel Duchamp. But over time, his authorship got questioned; the Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven was cited as possible author. Essentially binary discussions followed, to which this book opposes a systematic approach in seven theses. Far from claiming to provide answers, it gathers elements that could potentially lead to a broader research plan. Seller Inventory # APC9783743907607

About this Item: Milan, Galeria Schwartz, 1964. 1 vol. (320 x 226 mm) de 79 pp., broché, couv. ill. Précieux exemplaire offert par l'éditeur à son illustrateur, Man Ray.Édition originale. Couverture et frontispice de Marcel Duchamp, et 9 hors texte de Man Ray.Envoi signé : " à Man Ray, avec profonde reconnaissance pour ses admirables illustrations. Arturo Schwarz, Milan, 9.5.64. P.S. : this is the "commun" edition, the original edition with the original lithos will be ready at the end of this month". About this Item: Editions Trianon, Paris, 1959. Cloth in Illustrated Jacket. Condition: Very Good -. First Edition. 193pp, profusely illustrated in b&w and color. Designed by Marcel Duchamp. Text in French. With a bibliography. This graphically striking publication is Robert Lebel's catalogue raisonné of two hundred and seven works executed by Marcel Duchamp between 1902 and 1958 that includes a design by the pioneering Dada and Surrealist master. An internally most handsome example of the 1959 French first printing showing minor abrading to the cloth over the tips of the boards at both ends of the spine along with some mottling and light discoloration of the cloth in a bright, well preserved English language Trianon Press dust jacket housed in the publisher's unprinted chipboard slipcase bearing the BOLDLY SIGNED PRESENTATIONS "Cher Emily / Cher Georges / Staempfli / Anges de Cadaques / et pas du ski nautique / affecteusement / Marcel 1961" and "lu et apprové (pas le livre, la dedicace) / Robert Lebel 1961" in blue ink across the portrait of Duchamp on the second preliminary. Swiss-born George William Staempfli moved to New York in 1935 where he later worked for Knoedler Gallery before becoming the curator of paintings at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. In 1959 he and his wife Emily opened the Staempfli Gallery in Manhattan, and the following year the couple purchased a home in Cadaques, Spain where they frequently hosted their close art world friends including Salvador and Gala Dali - who the gallery showed - and Marcel and Teeny Duchamp. Near Fine (moderate surface wear and wear to the extremities, 1/4-inch closed tear and crease to the upper edge of the front cover, slight creasing along the binding, stray ink marks and toning to the rear cover, Japanese publisher's sticker (Meiji Shobo / Tokyo-Osaka) on inside front cover; interior pages have a few stray marks and light creases, but are intact with no tears). From David Levi Strauss, writing in The Book of 101 Books: "This is Georges Hugnet's first volume of "poémes-découpages." The title echoes André Mallarmé's Un Coup de Dés N'Abolira Jamais le hasard (1895), and Hugnet's poems, printed on the left-hand pages of the book, mirror the usual spacing and various typefaces and sizes of Un Coup de Dés.Hugnet had joined the Surrealists by 1932, and the collages on the right-hand pages, centered around nude images cut out of Paris Magazine, rehearse typical Surrealist themes. The cover by Marcel Duchamp spells out the title in letters containing the names of a whole Surrealist pantheon, including Sade, Freud, Rimbaud, Paracelsus, Swift, Heraclitus, Roussel, Chaplin, Jarry, Uccello, and Saint-Just, and also a Man Ray photograph of Duchamp's assisted readymade "Why Not Sneeze, Rrose Sélavy?" consisting of 152 marble cubes the size of sugar cubes, a thermometer, and a cuttlebone inside a small cage. Duchamp's object was included this same year in the exhibition Fantastic Art, Dada, and Surrealism, organized by Alfred Barr at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and Hugnet wrote the preface for the catalogue.".
