Condition: Very Good. N.d., 1920s, probably mid to late 1920s. The kit consists of a partly printed concertina of photographs beginning and after, two order books, two boxed hair samples, four other hair samples unboxed (we aren't certain the correct count is four, since two might represent the same sample which split), and the outer box which has internal compartments. The outer black box, measuring 19 by 33.5 cm, 5 cm deep, has two larger photos, both sepia and white, on the inside lid, showing a model in a before and after marcel-ling. The concertina, which on its coverbears the title, "12 Minutes with the Marcelwaver -- Makes a Perfect Wave", shows the same model, with eight black and white photos, here black and white, with the first and last the same, but smaller, than the two photos on the lid. The brochure cover is 15 by 9.5 cm, its cover, a folded card with a surface simulating the look of morocco. The photos within are held together by two white bands pasted to the backs of the photos, with a small separation between the photos. The manner the books are attached to one another looks quite amateurish and crude, but this was how the company issued the concertina, we have no doubt. The order form books look like checkbooks in size and format, with each sheet within perforated so the customer's receipt can be detached from the order retained by the company. The outer box is divided into two compartments. We assume, without being certain, that the box was a standard way the company issued its kit to salesmen and perhaps retailers who sold their products. The outer box shows moderate wear. Otherwise, everything is reasonably well preserved, and we would have to say the entirely is a rare survivor, although we are hard-pressed to corroborate this as we would our more standard fare. For what it's worth, we could find no listings for the company on the OCLC First Search database, but one can find things from the company available on Ebay, although not this kit, on the date of our listing. Box. The booklets within: Stapled wraps. Also two boxes within.
