Beklagen an…dere Historiker die einseitige Sichtweise der Philippicae, erkennt diese Untersuchung die darin verborgenen Mà glichkeiten zur Gewinnung eines realistischen Blickes auf Antonius. In einer umfassenden und kritischen Quellenanalyse werden die Philippicae untereinander, aber auch mit anderen zeitgenà ssischen Quellen und historisch belegtem Faktenwissen abgeglichen, so dass bewusste aber auch unbewusste Verfälschungen durch Cicero und seine zunehmend extreme Position zu Antonius aufgedeckt werden kà nnen. Diese quellenbasierte Untersuchung ermà glicht nicht nur eine Einordnung von Antonius, sondern auch von Cicero in das politische Geschehen dieser ereignisreichen Zeit. So bekommt Ciceros propagiertes Selbstbild als letzter wahrer Schützer der res publica im Verlauf der Arbeit zunehmend tiefe Kratzer, da er mit seinem politischen Verhalten republikanischen Strukturen verriet. Der Zersetzungsprozess der Republik war stark fortgeschritten und die verschiedenen Protagonisten rangen in Rom, aber auch in den bedeutenden Provinzen um Macht und Einfluss. Cicero erkannte zu dieser Zeit in Antonius die zentrale Gefahr für die Republik und unterstellte ihm, eine Alleinherrschaft nach Vorbild Caesars anzustreben. Cicero verurteilte Antonius` Lebensführung und sein politisches Agieren, da er den in der rà mischen Gesellschaft vollzogenen Wandel von Normen nicht akzeptierte. Die jungen nobiles hatten ein neues Klassenbewusstsein entwickelt, welches auch bei Antonius im politischen und privaten Auftreten seinen Ausdruck fand. Antonius darf nicht aus den überlebten Moralvorstellungen seines Kontrahenten Cicero bewertet werden. Die politischen MaÃnahmen zur Sicherung und zum Ausbau seiner Machtstellung zeigen einen politisch versierten Mann, der über eine namhafte und treue Anhängerschaft verfügte. Oftmals reagierte Antonius lediglich auf gegen ihn gerichtete politische Angriffe, so dass Ciceros Unterstellung von einer angestrebten tyrannis zweifelhaft ist. Letztlich musste Cicero seine starre gegen Antonius gerichtete Politik nicht nur mit dem Leben bezahlen, sondern ebnete dem späteren princeps Octavian den Weg zur Abschaffung der res publica.

Johann Geiler (1445-1510) was a native of Schaffhausen, brought up in Kaysersberg (Alsace), and educated at the newly founded universities of Freiburg and Basel. He became a doctor of theology in 1475 and from 1478 lived in Strasburg as a preacher at the Cathedral. Later called the 'German Savonarola,' he was one of the most effective and forceful advocates of Church reform at the end of the 15th century. III. Marco Antonio Sabellico (1436-1506), an Italian humanist and historian from Venice, was a member of the circle of Aldus Manutius, and became the librarian of San Marco with responsibility for the library of Cardinal Bessarion (now Biblioteca Marciana). His comprehensive history of the world in ninety-two books, Enneades sive rapsodiae historiarum (1504), is considered the first humanistic work of its kind. The present history of the Jews is an excerpt of that world chronicle, edited by Johannes Kusswerth (or Kusthuert) from Weißenstadt in Franconia, who dedicated the work to the duke of Saxony, Frederick the Wise.
