L'exemplaire a été enrichi d'un second frontispice avant le faux-titre, il s'agit du frontispice de la Relation de la bataille… de Marengo présentée à l'empereur par le Maréchal Berthier, ouvrage paru en 1808. Ce frontispice où l'on voit Napoléon à cheval écoutant le maréchal Berthier lui exposer le plan de la bataille que tient un garde, a été contrecollé sur un tissu rouge. La plaquette contient seulement un faux-titre, en effet, la couverture, qui n'a pas été conservée, faisait semble t-il office de page de titre : sous un aigle impérial central, elle affichait seulement la date et, Paris, En vente chez tous les libraires. Livre aux armes et au chiffre de Napoléon III. Reliure en plein chagrin rouge d'époque. Dos à nerfs orné de 5 petites abeilles. Plat supérieur frappé en son centre des armes impériales avec le cordon de l'ordre du Saint Esprit. 4 aigles dans les écoinçons et multiples encadrements. Plat inférieur au chiffre de Napoléon III. Semi d'étoiles et cercles en encadrement des contreplats avec gardes de soie moirée. Tranches dorées. Quelques rousseurs pâles éparses. Très bel exemplaire. * L'épopée napoléonienne est encadrée par les batailles de Marengo et Waterloo. Napoléon lui-même n'oublia jamais l'importance et le symbole de cette bataille, et 5 années plus tard eut déjà lieu une commémoration et un projet architectural. | [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS] First edition, illustrated with 11 plates including a frontispiece. This copy has been enriched with a second frontispiece inserted before the half-title: the frontispiece from the Relation de la bataille de Marengo présentée à l'empereur par le Maréchal Berthier, published in 1808. This image, depicting Napoleon on horseback listening to Marshal Berthier outlining the battle plan held by a guard, has been mounted on red cloth. The booklet contains only a half-title, as the original coverwhich has not been preservedappears to have served as the title page: beneath a central imperial eagle, it simply bore the date and the mention "Paris, En vente chez tous les libraires."Volume bearing the arms and cipher of Napoleon III.Contemporary full red shagreen binding. Spine with raised bands, decorated with five small bees. The upper board features the imperial arms at center, surrounded by the collar of the Order of the Holy Spirit, with four eagles in the corners and multiple frames. The lower board bears the cipher of Napoleon III. Moiré silk endpapers framed by a pattern of stars and circles. All edges gilt. Occasional light foxing.A very handsome copy. * The Napoleonic epic is framed by the battles of Marengo and Waterloo. Napoleon himself never forgot the importance and symbolism of this battle, and only five years later a commemoration and architectural project were already underway. 46pp.
