Trade Paperback. Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" In Near Fine condition with minimal shelfwear; a good, clean copy. Signed and inscribed by author to half-title page. 'For Nikolai and Emily, with love, Valerie'. // 'From the author of Seven Loves comes this austere, passionately shaped collection of stories that courageously explores the dynamic nature of modern marriage, the life-shattering heartbreak that often accompanies its collapse, and the fickle way in which the boundaries between us can be broken, erased, and newly defined. At her daughter's wedding, an alcoholic widow finds a new beginning when she is swept off her feet by the bride's former secret lover. A man finds himself in a position of terrible power when he discovers his ex-wife's boyfriend with another woman. A woman who killed her policeman husband in a rage struggles to reconcile feelings of emotional worthlessness and a longing for human affection after two decades in prison. A widower of twenty-three years introduces his wary daughters to his new love, a woman whom he has decided to marry one week after meeting, and who once took an axe to a bear to save her husband. Trueblood unites past and present through her characters' complex personalities as she skillfully unravels their tumultuous relationships, giving readers a glimpse into marital circumstances that, though often tragic, will surely ring familiar.' -- publisher.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First Edition (NAP). Once listed, this will be the Only signed copy anywhere on the Internet. The signed inscription is on the blank first front end paper ( 'Jane, Can you believe after all "this" trauma I'm finally published! What fun, Affectionately, A.T., June 27, 1995, NYC'). As you can see from the photos, the covers are in terrific shape, exceptionally clean with almost to no wear, just a little bump off the top edge of the rear cover. The rest of the edges are in perfect shape. So are the corners and the spine ends. The silver lettering on the spine is quite bright. The book is square and very solidly bound from cover to cover, nicely tight pages throughout, no binding issues at all. There is one small stain near the top of the middle page edge. It does not make its way onto the actual pages, although you can see it on the page edge as you read the book. Other than this one spot, the page edges are perfectly clean. The pages within the book appear to be perfectly clean as well. I'm scrolling through them without finding any instances of soiling. There is, however, toning at the margins, which in part has to do with the type of paper that was used. I'm not seeing any creasing or dogeared corners. There are no markings. There are no attachments of any kind. And with the exception of the author's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. The dust jacket is quite clean, however it does have toning off the front bottom edge and to a lesser extent, depending on the angle, off the front top edge as well. Same thing, though very lightly, off the top and bottom edges of the front flap. The jacket doesn't appear to have any wear. There are no tears. The corners look very good. So do the spine ends. The jacket is not clipped. It will be fitted with a protective cover after the photos are scanned. This book offers 'the inside scoop on marriage, told exclusively from a man's point of view. In confidential interviews, 63 men, aged 24 to 68, married, divorced, widowed, and cohabiting reveal their most intimate feelings about love and relationships. Written in an engaging style--- it's almost like being invited to eavesdrop on a private, highly personal conversation-----Why Men Marry is an inspiring read for women and men who want to gain a better understanding of this often-elusive relationship. Ms. Lankford is no stranger to a man's world. As a senior information officer in public affairs for The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, she negotiated the typically male domain of tunnels, bridges, and airports. She has a Masters degree in personnel psychology from Columbia University. This is her first book, but her third marriage.'. Inscribed by Author(s).
