The first edition of a prose satire on the British Armed Forces by ' A lover of the mathematicks' - a pseudonym for Grub Street satirical writer Ned Ward (1667 â" 1731), best known for his 'complete survey' of London, The London Spy, which appeared in 18 monthly instalments from November 1698. The lighthearted work consists of a collection of Ward's distinctive 'characters', each parodying a rank or station of the Army or Navy in turn. Ward, a pub owner and frequent attendee of London's taverns, would be mocked in the Dunciad by Pope as an 'ale-house keeper', a statement truthful but nonetheless certainly intended as an insult. Size: 8vo.
