L'artiste fait part de la gravure prochaine d'un célèbre tableau à l'attribution très controversée : l'Apollon et Marsyas, acquis en 1850 par le collectionneur anglais Morris Moore qui soutenait, en dépit de l'avis de nombreux conservateurs, son attribution à Raphaël. Exposé à Londres, Paris, Vienne, Venise et Milan, il fut finalement acquis en 1883 par le musée du Louvre pour la somme de 200 000 francs. Son attribution est désormais donnée au Pérugin.
