Pamela Lyndon Travers OBE (born Helen Lyndon Goff; 1899 1996) was an Australian-British writer who spent most of her career in England. She is best known for the Mary Poppins series of books, which feature the eponymous magical nanny. Goff was born in Maryborough, Queensland, and grew up in the Australian bush before being sent to boarding school in Sydney. Her writing was first published when she was a teenager, and she also worked briefly as a professional Shakespearean actress. Upon immigrating to England at the age of 25, she took the name "Pamela Lyndon Travers" and adopted the pen name P. L. Travers in 1933 while writing the first of eight Mary Poppins books. Travers travelled to New York City during World War II while working for the British Ministry of Information. At that time, Walt Disney contacted her about selling to Walt Disney Productions the rights for a film adaptation of Mary Poppins. After years of contact, which included visits to Travers at her home in London, Walt Disney obtained the rights and the film Mary Poppins premiered in 1964. In this, the 5th Mary Poppins title, Mary Poppins takes her charges to the Herb Garden in a park in London for a night of magic on Midsummer's Eve. Nothing appears to be the same and the poor Park Keeper is worried about who is breaking the bye-laws. Of course Mary Poppins is present with Michael, Jane with the babies in the perambulator. Bear is hungry so Mrs. Corry tears off one of her fingers. Imagine Bear's surprise when he discovers it is barley sugar! What is Mr. Banks all excited about? How about Orion? Will the Park Keeper really find true love by walking backwards after having rubbed cucumber behind his ears? Children of all ages will want to read and find out. Vintage Mary Poppins. The delightful illustrations are by Mary Shepard, who drew the art for the earlier editions. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 91 pages.

Mary Poppins appeared in 1934 and was an immediate success" (Carpenter & Prichard, 540). It centers on magical English nanny of the same name. She is blown by the east wind to Number 17 Cherry Tree Lane, London, and into the Banks's household to care for their children. It was adapted by Walt Disney in 1964 into a musical film titled Mary Poppins, starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. It received a total of thirteen Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture ā" an unsurpassed record for any other film released by Walt Disney Studios ā" and won five; Best Actress for Andrews, Best Film Editing, Best Original Music Score, Best Visual Effects, and Best Original Song for "Chim Chim Cher-ee". In 2013, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". Mary Poppins is widely considered to be Walt Disney's "crowning achievement", being his only film to garner a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars in his lifetime. In 2004, Disney Theatrical in collaboration with Cameron Mackintosh produced a stage musical also called Mary Poppins in London's West End theatre. The stage musical was transferred to Broadway. In 2013 the film Saving Mr. Banks depicted the making of the 1964 film.
