A bright copy of John Drinkwater's historical play surrounding Mary Stuart, inscribed to fellow author and friend, Jack Crawford. The first US edition. Inscribed 'with every fond wish' from the author to fellow author, friend, and the professor of English at Yale University, Jack Crawford. Crawford has written a note under the inscription, dating it as 'The first night of "Mary Stuart" at the Ritz Theatre, New York', also adding that part of the first scene was written at his house at New Haven during the winter of 1920. 'Mary Stuart' was written by English poet and dramatist, John Drinkwater, who was known for his popular plays, such as this one. This particular performance is based on the life of the infamous Scottish queen, being a tale of betrayal, ambition and power. As mentioned in Crawford's inscription, this play was performed in New York at the Ritz Theatre between March and April 1921, with the likes of Leslie Palmer, Russ Whytall and Charles Waldron being among the cast. Bound in the publisher's original quarter cloth, with paper-covered boards. Bound in the publisher's original quarter cloth, with paper-covered boards.
