New York: Leavitt & Allen, [n.d., circa 1854-1860]. 263 pages plus five engraved portrait plates, including the frontispiece, and a presentation leaf printed in four colors following the frontispiece. Original publisher's full leather elaborately stamped in gilt and blind; all edges gilt. 19 x 13.5 cm. Ex-Sondley Reference Libra…ry with faint reminder of removed call number on spine and embossed stamps on the title page and all plates; attractive bookplate on the pastedown, and two marginal ink accession stamps. Else fair to good. Light wear to hinges with minor repair at base of rear hinge. Rear free endpaper lacking; one signature slightly sprung, but all matter is holding well and binding is sound. Foxing to the plates and facing pages; occasional marginal soiling or stains. Early name and name stamp on front endpapers (George H. Hell). Later edition of this Masonic gift book. It is largely a reprint of "The Masonic Offering, a Gift for All Seasons" (N.Y.: Lamport, et al., 1854; reprinted circa 1854 by Leavitt & Allen), with slightly abridged text and new plates. In the prior editions, the plates explicitly depicted Masonic and Biblical subjects; here, these are replaced by portrayals of generic themes: beauty, justice, faith, hope, and charity. Together with the omission of the word "Masonic" from the title, this suggests that the publishers perhaps hoped to profit from the wider market for gift books by downplaying the Masonic textual content. Thompson indicates that the true first edition of this anthology was probably "'The Masonic Offering for 1852,' ed. by John Perry and Paschal Donaldson, New York, Cornish, Lamport, & Co., [c. 1851] . . . Contributors were interested in Masonry rather than in belles lettres. They include J.C. Hagen, John T. Mayo, and Alfred A. Phillips." --Thompson, "American Literary Annuals and Gift Books, 1825-1865," p. 139.
