Cloth. Condition: Fine. 1st Limited Edition. First limited edition: one of 750 numbered copies SIGNED by the author. This is copy 51. Printed at The Spiral Press. Fine in quarter dark blue cloth and tan paper covered boards, gilt titles on a small black cover label with gilt spine titles on a black panel; in the very nearly fine publisher's tan, unlettered cardboard slipcase that shows a bit of shelfwear. A Masque of Mercy is a blank-verse dramatic narrative that, along with A Masque of Reason (1945), probe whether man's best efforts would be good enough in God's sight. In A Masque of Mercy, Frost playfully "investigates" Jonah's rebellion. Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition, Limited Edition. About Fine condition. Limited edition, this copy #221 of 751, and signed by Frost on the limitation page. Slim 8vo. size, 46 pp. Bound in quarter navy blue buckram lined in gold over tan paper boards with cover and spine titles in gold and black, with two-tone text in blue and black. A special edition of Frost's droll meditation on the persistent intrusion of the ultimate into the mundane. Apart from a very slight browning on the gutters of the pastedowns--likely a reaction from the glue, hence About Fine rather than Fine--the book is pristine, beautifully tight, bright, clean and clear, and is likely unread. In a VG+ tan papered board slipcase with one small stain near the bottom and a few scattered small spots of light soiling and very minor wear, but otherwise very tight and solid. Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. This is the first, limited, numbered, and signed edition of one of iconic American poet Robert Frost's precious few dramatic works. This limited edition was printed for the publisher, Henry Holt and Company, by The Spiral Press in September 1947 and is given publication precedence over the first trade edition. 751 copies of this first and limited edition were produced, each signed by Frost on the hand-numbered limitation page. This is copy "717" signed "Robert Frost". This limited edition was bound in quarter dark blue linen cloth over tan paper-covered boards with gilt rule transitions, the front cover with an inset dark brown, gilt-stamped title and author panel. The contents were printed on white laid paper. The volume was issued in an unadorned tan paper-covered card slipcase. This copy is in very good plus condition, retaining the original slipcase. The binding is square, clean, tight, and sharp-cornered with mild, superficial abrasions to the bottom corners and edges. The contents are bright, retaining a pleasingly crisp feel with no previous ownership marks. The sole interior defect is spotting, which appears entirely confined to the endpapers. The binding is now protected beneath a clear, removable mylar cover that fits within the slipcase. The original slipcase is intact, with some wear to extremities occasionally exposing the card beneath the tan paper and superficial moisture stains to the top and bottom edges. Iconic American poet Robert Lee Frost (1874-1963) is "generally not known as a dramatist despite his lifelong love of the theater and despite the fact that many of his best poems owe a large part of their greatness to their dramatic nature Frost's most important 'plays,' however, may be his two masques, A Masque of Reason (1945) and A Masque of Mercy (1947). Though both pieces have been staged, they are best considered as closet dramas in which distinctly human, American, and modern prototypes engage in theological/ideological debate via colloquial blank verse. A Masque of Reason concerns itself chiefly with the individual's treatment of God, A Masque of Mercy focuses more on God's treatment of the individual. Specifically, the masque probes the prophet Jonah's difficulty in reconciling Old Testament justice with New Testament mercy. Jonah believes that, in offering mercy to unbelievers, God is failing to dispense justice properly The merits of Jonah's position are debated in a contemporary New York City bookstore by Paul the Apostle (the primary author of New Testament mercy) and My Brother's Keeper (a proponent of social justice through 'New Deal' programs of wealth redistribution Again, Frost emphasizes the limitations of humanity's knowledge of God."A Masque of Mercy was published at a time when Frost's stature had risen to an apex sufficient for publishers and his reading public to indulge his literary experiment. By 1947, Frost had already won all of his still-unrivaled four Pulitzer Prizes for poetry (1924, 1931, 1937, and 1943). Frost spent the final decade and a half of his life as "the most highly esteemed American poet of the twentieth century" with an accumulating hoard of academic and civic honors. Two years before his death he became the first poet to read in the program of a U.S. Presidential inauguration (Kennedy, January 1961). He became one of America's rare "public literary figures, almost an artistic institution" and was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 1960 for his poetic works. Known for his realistic depictions of rural life and his command of American colloquial speech, Frost frequently wrote about settings from rural life in New England in the early twentieth century, using them to examine complex social and philosophical themes.

First Edition and a FINE ASSOCIATION COPY INSCRIBED BY ROBERT FROST, dated 1950. 8vo, publisher's original light blue cloth lettered in gilt on the spine. In the original dustjacket. [6], 23, [1 blank] pp. A very fresh and well preserved copy, the blue cloth excellent but for trivial rubbing at the extremities, quite handsome with only some expected age mellowing and a small chip at tip of the lightly faded jacket spine panel. A few unobtrusive spots on three early leaves likely caused by something once laid in. FIRST EDITION AND A FINE AND PLEASING SIGNED ASSOCIATION COPY, inscribed by Frost to Virginia Proctor, secretary to Harvard President James Byrant Conant. Though Frost tenure at Harvard was short, his friendship with Mrs. Proctor lasted well beyond his years in Cambridge. It was President Conant who first cited Frost as "The Poet of New England" when Frost was given an honorary degree of Litt.D. in 1937. In 1938 Frost resigned from Amherst and was elected to Harvard's Board of Overseers and that year also saw him placed in the English department at the university. Conant reappointed Frost for the years 1939 through 1942. Though Frost's formal ties with Harvard would end in that year, his association with Virginia Proctor would continue for years following. The inscription on this 1947 publication reads, "To Virginia / From R. F. Frost / 1950" This is the FIRST EDITION of Robert Frost's experiment in blank verse play in which Biblical characters in modern settings discuss ethics and man's relation to God. "Mr. Frost, who has never been impressed by superficial orthodoxies, rolls up his poetic sleeves and discusses the possibility of reconciling justice with mercy in a sharp wit, a firm logic, and a strong faith in God and man. Here is proof again, and shining proof, of his genius."- Publisher.
