Il s'agit de la thèse publiée du chartiste François Gébelin. Il sera ensuite nommé à la bibliothèque de Bordeaux, où il publiera les deux volumes de la Correspondance de Montesquieu. Dans cet ouvrage, François Gébelin étudie successivement le conflit entre Matignon et le parlement de Bordeaux, les opérations militaires en Guyenne, les finances du gouverneur, le siège de Blaye et la pacification. Maréchal de France, Jacques II Goyon de Matignon (1525-1598) succéda à son ami Michel de Montaigne au poste de maire de Bordeaux. Nommé gouverneur de Bordeaux en 1584, il mit en oeuvre la célèbre expulsion des Jésuites de Bordeaux en 1589, et il assiégea les ligueurs retranchés dans la citadelle de Blaye en 1593, ce qui sera l'occasion de la victoire navale espagnole sur les alliés anglais du Maréchal, lors de la "Bataille de Blaye" (également connue comme "Bataille du Bec d'Ambès" ou "Bataille de Bordeaux" pour les espagnols).
