Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Apparent First English Edition (NAP). The French original, Matiere et Lumiere, was first published in Paris in 1937. On the front end paper is the ownership signature of the German chemist Herbert Freundlich (see photo). He signed his name H. Freundlich. The signature matches the signature on his Wikipedia profile. Dr. Freundlich came to live in Minneapolis in 1939, the year this book was published, after accepting a professorship at the University of Minnesota. He died there two years later. This will be the Only book with his signature for sale on the Internet. 'Freundlich's brother Erwin was a working associate of Albert Einstein's. He introduced experiments for which the general theory of relativity could be tested by astronomical observations based on navigational redshift. Herbert Freundlich was the director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Physical Chemistry and Electrochemistry from 1919 until 1933. when the racial policies of the Nazi party demanded the dismissal of non-Aryans from senior posts. Freundlich's father was Jewish. In 1934 Freundlich became foreign member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. Before coming to Minneapolis he was a guest professor at University College London. His most prominent student was Robert Havemann who became a well-known colloid chemist of the German Democratic Republic. Freundlich's main works dealt with the coagulation and stability of colloidal solutions. His work is of continuing importance, with his 1906 paper "Over the absorption in solution" becoming highly cited at the beginning of the 21st century. The Freundlich Equation or Freundlich absorption isotherm is an Imperial relation between the concentration of a solute on the surface of an exorbitant to the concentration of the solute in the liquid which it is in contact.' Despite being published way back in 1939, this book is in excellent condition. You can see the blue covers in the photos. They are very clean. The silver lettering on the spine is bright. The edges and corners are in excellent shape. The top edge of the spine has just a teeny bit of crinkling. The page edges are very clean. The book is square and very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The interior of the book is in very nice condition tool. It runs 300 pages followed by an unnumbered four page section titled 'Overleaf: particulars of publications of similar interest issued by George Allen & Unwin.' At the bottom of the half-title page there is a colorless raised personal stamp of a George Hefferon. Mr. Hefferon studied under Victor Hess, a Nobel Prize scientist. A nuclear physicist and optical computer scientist, Mr. Hefferon was employed with the Perkin Elmer Corporation for twenty years where he was a Systems Engineer in the Hubble Space Telescope project. a I decided to turn over every single page in the book. I can report that they are exceptionally clean. I came upon one early speck of a spot and after that only one other small inconspicuous spot. I did find three instances of an edge tear. The second one crosses through one letter on one side of the page and one letter on the other side of the page. The third edge tear touches one letter in the title of the chapter. In none of these three instances is the ability to read impacted. I didn't see any turned-down corners or placeholder creases. I saw a few of those fissure-shaped creases off the top edge of a few pages, no tears. The only marking or stamp is the one I just referenced. I found four instances of light penciling on the margin of a page. Two of them were followed by little exclamation marks. It's impossible to know whether they were created by Herbert Freundlich or George Hefferon. There is no other writing to be found anywhere in the book. There are no attachments. It is NOT ex-library. And that is a very detailed description of the condition of the book, something a scientist would appreciate.
