To bring that supply to market, a system of canals was set up in the 1830s, later replaced by railroads. The Lehigh Valley and Mauch Chuck was one of the major rail routes. Here the authors supply the story of the legendary road that eventually ran all the way from the Pennsylvania coal country to New York City.
