Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. A very nice signed copy of the First Printing with a complete numberline. A Near Fine copy in a Near Fine dust jacket with slight spine edge wear. Overall lovely copy. // ''Chew on this,' says Melrose Plant to Richard Jury, who's in the hospital being driven crazy by Hannibal, a nurse who likes to speculate on his chances for survival. Jury could use a good story, preferably one not ending with his own demise. Plant tells Jury of something he overheard in The Grave Maurice, a pub near the hospital. A woman told an intriguing story about a girl named Nell Ryder, granddaughter to the owner of the Ryder Stud Farm in Cambridgeshire, who went missing more than a year before and has never been found. What is especially interesting to Plant is that Nell is also the daughter of Jury's surgeon. But Nell's disappearance isn't the only mystery at the Ryder farm. A woman has been found dead on the track-a woman who was a stranger even to the Ryders. But not to Plant. She's the woman he saw in The Grave Maurice. Together with Jury, Nell's family, and the Cambridgeshire police, Plant embarks on a search to find Nell and bring her home. But is there more to their mission than just restoring a fifteen-year-old girl to her family? 'The Grave Maurice' is the eighteenth entry in the Richard Jury series and, from its pastoral opening to its calamitous end, is full of the same suspense and humor that devoted readers expect from Martha Grimes.' -- publisher.

Bierce, Ambrose, 1842-1914. The Monk and the Hangman's Daughter. Translated from the German of Richard Voss by Gustav Adolf Danziger and adapted by Ambrose Bierce. Introduction by Maurice Valency. Illustrations by Michel Ciry. New York: The Heritage Press, 1967, xiv, 80pp., good light brown cloth in slipcase, but spine slightly faded, edge of first few pages lightly bumped, light wear to slipcase. The publication is called "one of the most tangled episodes of his career. A young German-Jewish dentist, Gustav Adolph Danziger, had brought him a rough translation of a short novel by Richard Voss, Der Mönch von Berchtesgaden, which had appeared in a German monthly. Bierce rewrote the story from Danziger's translation, and the two signed a complicated contract dividing the rewards they expected to get. Their work appeared serially under the title The Monk and the Hangman's Daughter in the Examiner; then it was published by F. J. Schulte of Chicago, who went bankrupt. For years Danziger squabbled with Bierce over The Monk and the Hangman's Daughter" (M. E. Grenander). - In a 1931 article Frank Monaghan compared Bierce's version with that of Voss and found few differences. Bierce cannot qualify as the "author", he concluded.

Born in India, where his father was a surveyor working for the East India Company, Barrymore (1849-1905) was a prominent 19th century stage actor who was shot by notorious gunfight Jim Currie in 1879. As a playwright, he later claimed that La Tosca was a plagarism of his work. Contraversial, and a vivid character, he became the founder of the leading actor family of Barrymore: he was father to Lionel Barrymore, Ethel Barrymore and John Barrymore (Drew Barrymore's grandfather), through his marriage to Georgina Drew.
