First Edition
A standout installment in the Aubrey-Maturin series, set during the Napoleonic Wars and centered on Captain Jack Aubrey's command in the Indian Ocean campaign against French-held Mauritius and Réunion. Notable for its focus on naval command structure, inter-officer conflict, and the strategic realities of fleet operations, this volume is often cited for its realism in depicting leadership under pressure. Includes map endpapers detailing the Mauritius campaign. This copy carries distinctive dual government and military provenance, beginning as a Library of Congress duplicate - stamped 'Surplus - 1', indicating deaccession from one of the most significant national collections in the United States. It was subsequently incorporated into a U.S. Air Force Base Library (FL5621), Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany, as evidenced by stamped markings. This progression - from federal repository to overseas military installation - reflects Cold War-era distribution of reading materials to U.S. service members stationed abroad and offers a tangible link to military cultural infrastructure and library circulation systems. Condition: Very Good overall. Binding sound; text and maps clean. Typical ex-library features include institutional stamps (Library of Congress and U.S. Air Force), removal marks from pocketing, tape shadows, and minor staining to pastedowns. Dust jacket present in protective cover with toning and wear consistent with service use. A solid reading copy elevated by uncommon institutional history. Patrick O'Brian (1914-2000) remains one of the most respected writers of historical fiction, with the Aubrey-Maturin series widely praised for its authenticity, depth of characterization, and precise rendering of naval life during the age of sail.
