Wiener, Max, 1882-1950, ed. Abraham Geiger and Liberal Judaism. The Challenge of the Nineteenth Century. Compiled with a biographical introduction by Max Wiener, translated from the German by Ernst J. Schlochauer. Philadelphia: Jewish Publication Society, 1962, stated First Edition, 305pp., worn dust-jacket chipped around edges, original price $4.50, very good black cloth, edges rubbed, previous owner's stamp, twice on endpaper. Both the author and the translator died before the book could be published. Translations of passages from Geiger are preceded by a substantial 80pp. biography by Wiener. Immanuel Lewy, reviewed the book, and criticized Geiger's extreme liberalism and elimination of rituals, but praises his role in founding the Hochschule für die Wissenschaft des Judentums in 1872. "We have since learned that Judaism is not reducible to purely religious terms, that rituals are not as expendable as they seemed to be in the days of Geiger. But Geiger's struggle was not in vain. He founded the first Jewish academy where Jewish history and religious worship could be investigated and analyzed without any dogmatic limitation" (Lewy).
